On the chair?

Did you get my mail about the "bikes"? A great idea for a great cause....

I hope to bring one or at least the plans....

Please let me know if you are having difficulty. I have met some of the nicest people who are willing to give help. :sombrero:

I didn't see an email about bikes, but I'm still workin' on an answer regarding the wheelchair. Stay tuned... ^_^

Na,

Dewey won't get the chair. All they have is circumstantial evidence against him. None of the witnesses will talk. :D

I have two sources of chairs if your's does not work out.

The "bike" lead is local and it is my hope that Mario might benefit by using one for his corn crop. :sombrero:

Okay, I gues I wasn't paying enough attention that day. I did follow the link to the pedal-powered stuff - it's really cool! I've forwarded it on to Vicki & asked if she thought there would be a good application for us, or for folks in the nearby villages.

The wheelchair contact is a regional person for Joni & Friends, working out of Akron. She was very interested in helping, and I sent her Abi's measurements a month & a half ago. I've sent a follow-up to see if she's had any luck in securing one for us.

Well, if it gets closer to the time of the trip and you don't hear anything, I have two very enthusiatic and qualified volunteers who have offered to find a wheelchair. One of which is a specialist in just such things, the other a surgeon who works in the area from here.

The bike machine can be adapted to all sorts of applications. No electricity needed, and the machine can mill grains, wash clothes, generate electricity. All it takes is spare bike parts and some welding with plans. I am pretty sure I can at least get a hold of the plans so the Mario need not beat the corn with a stick.

Even if not a bicycle-powered contraption, even this hand-crank model, similar to ones used by US farmers a hundred years ago, would help him out:

Corn Sheller

Designed for dry ear corn, will also hull walnuts. Made of first quality cast iron for ling life, painted with non-toxic red paint. Quickly attaches to a barrel or box with clamps. shells easily and cleans at a rate of 10-15 bushels per hour. Cobs fall into container to which it is attached. spring adjusts to all ear sizes. 8-1/4" picker wheel, weight 20 lbs.

I don't know how often he has to actually shell a mound of it like was down there last January, either at the orphange or at home, but at 180 bucks, it sure would go a long way to making life a little easier down there.

Of course, it still all has to be husked first... ^_^
