And there are more clips at youtube. It was my younger son who found the clips. He went to my room and looked at the pile of CDs and then searched Google for Michelangeli. When he found the Balade he set high volume on his speakers to check my reflexes - I was already sleeping - at 01:00. I woke and said ...Balade in Sol minor... who is playing ? To make a long story short, I managed to find the DVDs (Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy) and ordered them from Amazon.co.uk at outrageus prices - £17.01 each ! I hope they are Zone 2 DVDs... otherwise I will have to buy a multi zone DVD player. |

If I had an offspring who woke me at 1AM with music like that I would be very, very proud. All mine listen to is crap. Then I would kill him.

HOLY CARP!!!

I see so much of him in my teacher. His technique, fluidity of movement, absolute relaxation and being "one with the piano" I often hear, "This is how Michelangeli did it." This morning I must have had a touch of "pussy man syndrome" as tears started to form in my eyes watching this. THANK YOU!!! |

That was a great page, Michelangeli was one of the greatest. I liked some of the other performances as well. |

He is a marvelous pianist, but I have to say I don't like the results of his performance. Everything's in its place, very carefully planned, almost clinical. There is much to enjoy in it, but I don't think he gets at the heart of Chopin, at least for me. I've heard any number of recordings that move me much more. If you haven't heard Cortot, give it a try. It sounds like life and death - a deep romanticism and freedom of expression that I find lacking in ABM's version. Please don't misunderstand me. I'm pleased you posted and thank you for it. He is always always worth hearing even when I don't agree with him. The pianism alone is worth the time. |
