Does anyone remember Christmas candles from the 50's (...40's, 60's??). My stepfather's family had a box of them and my mother used to take them out every year.

Santa Claus, trees, angels, churches, snow men...

I'd like to find a link about this- I can't find anything with google- only links to Christmas sites selling new Christmas candles that don't look anything like them.

Yes, thank you, but older. I want to know who made the older candles.

most of the vintage collectable candles from that era were made by Gurley, Daniel.

Here is a blurb from a book:

"Gurley Candles were cute little wax figurines, designed to celebrate holidays & special occasions. They are all marked Gurley on the bottom. They were made so well and had so much detail that people decided to keep them year after year to decorate with instead of burning them. Woolworths and other five and dime stores sold them from about 1940 until the 1970's. They are still plentiful today and inexpensive.

Tavern Novelty candles were actually owned by Gurley. They were similiar to the Gurley candles but not quite details. All are marked Tavern on the bottom."

If you do a google image search on Gurley Christmas candles, you'll get a bunch of pictures.

One year, my Dad baked about 50 red velvet cakes for Christmas gifts to local friends. He put a Gurley choir boy candle on each one for decoration...when I saw the pictures, I remembered him doing that.

I'm glad you brought them up, Daniel, it gave me the opportunity to think about something I had forgotten completely. Daddy died in 1982.

thanks for the memory!

My Dad was in charge of making Christmas Puddings. He used to make them in batches of about 10 or so. We'd always get the job of wrapping up coins in wax paper to hide in each pudding. Always was a fun part of dessert on Christmas Day - looking to see if you were the lucky person who found a coin hidden in the piece you got.

Dad died in 1986. When I was home in Bermuda in the summer my sister informed me that she had 2 of Dad's Christmas puddings in the freezer (these things never perish!), and sent me back to San Diego with one. So this Christmas, with some help from some Black Seal Rum and some Guiness (first aid for Christmas puddings), and after the required annointing with brandy, I will have my final opportunity to be the lucky kid who finds a (now ancient) coin in my piece of Dad's Christmas Pudding.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those that understand binary and................

Thank you both. I talked to my mother today and asked her about the candles. She said they are not in good shape because they melted in the summertime but I told her not to throw them away. She used to make a display of candles every year. It seems to me like it was a more slow and gentle time. It made my day to find out more about them.
