You can increase your success at IQ tests the same way you can improve anything else you do, by practice. The IQ is a measure of your ability to perform IQ tests, nothing more. |

So that's it? The whole idea that IQ can be measured is corrupted by people who study for the test? Does that mean they don't test IQ anymore? |

I took the IQ test twice when I was young. As a result, I qualified for a couple "gifted and talented" courses in middle school. I dont know if they offer those anymore though... Regardless, the IQ test is dumb - almost as dumb as the SAT. |

when i was a kid my dad taught ed psych.. one class tested IQ and i was a guinea pig.. took a battery of tests.. over the course of the year my IQ supposedly went up about 50 points.. he thought it was due to acquiring test taking skills most likely. it's hard to measure |

Wouldn't it be pretty arrogant to think that intelligence could measured in one test on a linear scale? I've never taken an IQ test. I'm glad of that. I think it's an insulting idea really. |

ZOOOOOM!

I cannot think of anything on this earth that is more ridiculous than trying to quantify the entire span of one's mental ability with one number. (This isn't really what the test is designed for, but that's what a lot of folks think it tries to do.) Like all things, an IQ test is merely a tool, and it is important to understand its limitations. And there's quite a few. |

I don't know if I've ever taken one. Are they currently given at public schools? Private schools? College entry? Upon entry into the military? (I did take a zillion tests then, one may have been an IQ test but they didn't tell me a score, though I did qualify for any school they offered.) Applying for job? When/why/by whom are IQ tests usually administered today? I remember reading mid/upper income whites did better because of how they were written and they were under pressure to revise them so certain races stopped scoring so low. |

It has to go up, at least until a certain point. You aren't born with a 130 IQ. |

They're still given to establish a criterion for offering "gifted" curriculum in schools. They aren't given to all the kids (at least not here) but to the ones they think may benefit from curricular enrichment. The IQ score is one item inserted into a rubric which contains other test scores, teacher recommendations, unusual extracurricular accomplishments etc. Here, they have to do all that paper work to justify funding the gifted programs. |

I took an official IQ test. I think it does test intelligence fairly well, in the sense of the brain's processing capabilities. The logic and things of that nature translate into other areas of one's life. For those who say that these tests are heavily favored for those people who have studied the format and material, I did not find that to be true in my experience. I did not study for the SAT's - and I got a 1550 - and I did not study for the IQ test either, or take more than a few practice questions before it. Perhaps because I have a weird type of mind, I am more inclined to think in these logical and abstract ways, much like in music. Now, the IQ test score does not necessarily indicate what you will do with your brain's processing power. My score was high - in fact they asked me to retake it just to make sure it was not a fluke, and I got 5 points higher than the first time! (I guess having taken it twice helped) What matters is what you do with your brain's abilities - and how you develop them. For example, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was estimated to have an IQ of over 200 - which is extremely high. On my first test, I got a 165, and later 170. This is just a number, and indicates what I may be able to do if I am able to fully use the brain that nature has given me. It does dictate certain capabilities - logically I should be able to do things faster than someone with a lower IQ, of say 130 or so. After a certain point, perhaps it becomes superflous - how much of a difference is there really between 190 and 200? There have been studies done that people with higher IQ tend to not fit into society as well. The brain works very differently for people with higher IQ than it does for people with average or above average IQ. That makes it hard for some to identify with most people as their thinking activity is very different. There is a reason creative people are often separated from society, or at least moreso than the average individual. |
