I wish I was born a Catholic. I am a Protestant. It can be good. It can be kind of boring. |

Methodist. Then I went to a Congregationalist school. I credit them with helping to educate me. |

The have some good songs. Of course as good Christians do every other demonination has stolen them and sings them without any attribution. |

Interesting story. Nothing against Evangelicals. I was just watching TBN this AM--and this Crouch guy--I guess the son of the founder was on selling a movie they produced about Esther. Anyway--the Crouch guy's wife was visible F-ed up on drugs or liquor or something. Flipping her hair, rambling on. Interesting stuff. And she was kind of cute. |

Hymnology is one of my areas of study. I think "without any attribution" isn't quite accurate, Tom. It's true that, for the most part, Harry in the Pew doesn't know Charles Wesley from Isaac Watts but their names are in the hymnals. Most of the churches I've attended have had strong music education and that is an exception anymore. I remember pictures of hymn writers in our children's choir room. Fanny Crosby had those little round blind lady glasses, but I thought it was really cool that there was a woman in the bunch. I had a pastor in one church who often took a minute to talk about the history of a hymn we were about to sing in service. It was nice...it helped people to focus on the doctrines of the text instead of just zoning out with the famliarity of it all. Last year, I 'inherited' (bought at auction) 25 hymnals from the estate of Jerome Hines. They are so neat...and I'm the only one in the world who would think so, so it's right that they are mine! Heh. They have his notes in them and a few have inscriptions in the front because they were gifts. Two are leather bound with his name engraved on the front in gold. I love hymns. |
