Reid: Congress ‘most corrupt in history’

Senate Democratic leader blasts Republican-led Congress

Dec 22, 2005

WASHINGTON - Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid called the Republican-led Congress "the most corrupt in history" Sunday, and distanced himself from Jack Abramoff, a powerful lobbyist at the center of an escalating probe...

Reid, like many members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, has received campaign contributions from Abramoff clients. Some lawmakers have returned those donations, but Reid gave no indication he would do so...

"America can do better than what we've done," said Reid. "The most corrupt Congress in the history of the country. We have such significant problems with what's going on in this country." ...

"I feel totally at ease that I haven't done anything that is even close to being wrong," Reid said.

Hmm, interesting.

I'm not familiar with the Senate ethics enough to know whether he's right or wrong about a "technical transfer", but it looks fishy.

However, it's not quite the same as soliciting underage pages. Maybe the same as what Frist has done, or what any number of Republicans have done ... and, if it's wrong, it's wrong, regardless of whether it's a Republican or a Democrat ... but not on the same order as Foley.

Nice diversionary try, though.

I'll see your Harry Reid and raise you one Duncan Hunter:

Hunter got break on taxes for home

Quote:

The discrepancy resulted in Hunter paying less in taxes than others in similar-sized properties, although the amount he saved is not clear. The county relies on square footage, lot size, comparable home sales and other factors to calculate assessments, but does not discuss specific parcels without a release from the homeowner.

Hunter refused to give assessors permission to discuss details about his property with The San Diego Union-Tribune, which has been examining the holdings of public officials since a bribery scandal last year sent former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham to federal prison.

Hunter said it was not his responsibility to make sure property records – and the resulting tax assessments – are correct.

We get a twofer with that quote - a reminder about the Dukester to boot.

From the WPost, about a recent poll:

Quote:

Foley has rekindled corruption as an issue at the top of voters' minds.

Democrats have a clear advantage on the topic, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll this month. When respondents were asked which party they trusted to handle various issues, Democrats led Republicans on ethics by 19 points - 49 percent to 30 percent. The chief reason apparently is that most of the lobbyists and lawmakers caught misbehaving - from Abramoff to Foley - are Republicans.

I think that the relevent portion of that last sentence is worth repeating, in bold:

most of the lobbyists and lawmakers caught misbehaving - from Abramoff to Foley - are Republicans.

It's just a matter of who got caught and who didn't.

The reason the democrats want to keep talking about Foley is because it keeps them from having to talk about issues - and God knows, democrats get into deep trouble when they have to actually address the issues.

Haven't Republicans controlled the Justice Department for almost six years? How is it that they keep catching only Republicans? Just bad luck?

So, Larry, you start the thread with accusations of criminal activity by Dems, then when it's turned around and Republican scandals are brought up, you accuse the Dems of avoiding the issues...

The truth is neither party is free from corruption. We'd all like to think the other is worse but in reality I'm not sure if it's one way or the other. It seems to me the GOP has it worse as of late with Abramoff, etc. but that might just be my bias talking

Did you know, Larry, that the guy who wrote the AP article on Reid had written two previous articles about Reid, each of which was full of lies and innuendo? Of course Reid hung up on this guy. Solomon is trying to nail him. The only problem is that Reid is clean. Here's some of the story:

Quote:

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) "collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn't personally owned the property for three years," the AP reports.

Except that's wrong. Reid made a $700,000 profit on the sale, not $1.1 million. Also, the story, by the AP’s John Solomon, makes it sound as if Reid got money for land he didn't own. But that's not the case.

The rest of it is here: You can't believe everything you Reid, Larry

And I'm supposed to believe a leftwing nutbob blog over the AP?

The sale and subsequent profits from it, regardless of whether it was 1.1 million of 700,000, is supposed to be reported. Hiding it in a LLC doesn't get him off the hook.

Actually, I'm more interested in rehashing the Dukester.

I find it interesting that he cut a deal to get less time in prison, but so far, the most he's done is write whiny hate letters to the San Diego newspaper for busting him. He better start talking, or the justice system needs to revisit his sentencing soon.

William "ice box" Jefferson is no Republican. Neither is Robert Menendez or Allan Mollohan.

The point was that more Republicans have been CAUGHT. Larry seemed to concede that, but refuses to theorize as to why a Republican DoJ would catch more Republicans, if fraud is just as rampant among the Dems.

As for your list ... I'll wait for the criminal cases, a la Nye and Cunningham and Abramoff. Or do you think that somehow the DoJ is predisposed to let Dems slide but to convict Republicans?

Do you imagine in your wildest fantasies that Jefferson is not headed for indictment? Do you really, with a straight face, want to represent that he has not been "caught"? Remember, you did say that DoJ has caught *only* Republicans.

Yes, that is the point I am trying to make. There are bad apples on both sides of the aisle and the party in power usually has more of them because, well, they are in power which makes them much more marketable.

I think the number of bad apples is pretty much fixed, whether a party is in power or opposition, it's just the chances of getting caught doing something go up when they're in power.

A bit of exaggeration on my part, as part of my sarcastic response. Which you would have realized, if you weren't looking to score points, by reading my bolded quote in an earlier post:

I read "only" to mean "only". I fail to see how saying "only" could be in furtherance of sarcasm. I took it to mean literally "only Republicans" which is incorrect and comes off as more than a bit partisan. It has nothing to do with scoring points but since you insist on seeing that way.

:basketball:

I'll just grab a couple more.
