9th Circuit Court Blocks Voter ID Enforcement

From Times Wire Reports
October 6, 2006

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has blocked enforcement of a state law that requires voters to show identification and would-be voters to submit proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

The general election is Nov. 7, and the deadline to register is Monday.

The law had already been used for the Sept. 12 primary and in some municipal elections.

State Atty. Gen. Terry Goddard said he would appeal.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
The judge obviously realizes that if you insist on voters being required to show identification and proof of citizenship, the next thing will be requiring judges to show brain activity and proof of intelligence.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Ninth Circuit Decision to Bar Voter ID Requirements

Today the U.S. Supreme Court voted unanimously to overturn a recent Ninth Circuit decision barring the enforcement of an Arizona voter ID law. Enacted in 2004 by citizen initiative, the law required proof of citizenship for new voter registrations and photo identification at the polls. Both the Evergreen Freedom Foundation (EFF) and Secretary of State Sam Reed have recommended this law as a model for Washington to follow, and today's decision underscores the legality of such requirements.

The Court chided the Ninth Circuit for acting without having all the proper facts, and for interfering right before a major election.

Regarding the merits of voter ID laws, the Court did not make a specific ruling but noted that: "Confidence in the integrity of our electoral processes is essential to the functioning of our participatory democracy. Voter fraud drives honest citizens out of the democratic process and breeds distrust of our government."

Jonathan Bechtle, director of EFF's Voter Integrity Project, agreed with the Court's ruling, saying, "Today's unanimous decision is good news. It helps pave the way legally for needed reforms in Washington, like proof of citizenship for voter registration. It also sends a message to courts that the legitimate desire of voters for better election security cannot be dismissed!

One should prove citizenship before voting? What a wacky concept.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Apparently, you only "hear" what you expect to "hear".

HOLY CARP!!!
I still do not understand the argument for not having to prove citizenship to register and show a photo ID to vote.

"Voter intimidation" is what I get as a response. How utterly ridiculous. :rolleyes2:

HEY! I AM INTIMIDATED BY THE IRS! I WANT INCOME TAXES TO BE ILLEGAL!

yeah, I didn't think it would work.
