The Chausson chansons ( ) were also quite enjoyable.

HOLY CARP!!!

That's a *wonderful* program! I was singing through the Schubert just last evening. (It's usually translated Shepherd on the Rock, we've always called it Scotch on the Rocks) I love the Korngold and Argento groups too. Diaphenia, like a daffa down dilly! Were the songs new to you? What did you think? |

*snicker All of the music was new to me, and all of the composers (except for Mozart and Schubert) were new to me as well. I really liked it! Hinchman is a very animated singer; her face really brightens up, and she has this enormous grin, when she is singing more spirited music, and her face grows darker for the more somber songs. She moves a lot, especially with her hands, gesturing at times as if she were performing in an opera. Her voice is so powerful, too. Korngold's music was interesting, though I thought the first song (Desdemona's Song) was perhaps a little uninteresting rhythmically. His music sounds almost impressionistic, like Debussy or Ravel. I really liked Argento. Some of the songs reminded me a little of Copland and Barber and Duteilleux - sort of that atonal 'sound' every now and then - very neat. Believe it or not, I'd never listened to any of Schubert's songs before. That was certainly a highlight of the program.

Schubert Schubert oh oh oh oh....we must get you more Schubert!! Argento is a neat dude. His writing for the voice is so skillful, he really understands the instrument. He has written several operas, Postcard from Morocco being performed fairly frequently by college/university programs. I particularly agree with your comparison to Barber. From a purely technical standpoint, they "sing" the same way. I hadn't really thought about that, but just sitting here, I am enjoying thinking of the similarity in how my throat feels good...massaged and relaxed after singing their stuff, as opposed to say, Rorem, who can make you feel like you've been gargling glass, if you don't plan and execute perfectly. One of my favorite arias is from Korngold's Die Tote Stadt it's called Marietta's Lied. When listening to his music with full orchestration, I am most often reminded of Richard Strauss. The Marietta's Lied sounds like it could be a long lost aria from Der Rosenkavalier. Very beautiful harmonies and a haunting long soaring vocal line. I'm glad you got to hear/see that good stuff done very well! I'm envious! |
