HOLY CARP!!!
Are you against fur coats?

Just wondering... I have a real knee-length fox fur coat that was my grandmas in the fourties which she has given to me. The skin on the elbow in the (edit - it's in the right arm not the left  ) arm is torn so it needs a bit of repairing, but when it is fixed i would LOVE to wear it out but i think i'd be too scared... God knows what anti-fur people would do to me.

I'm not a fan of fur, but even in my fur protesting days, I wasn't one to heckle or throw red paint :P. I did, however, used to go into fur shops and into the pockets of the coats for sale slip cards that said, "Enjoy your new coat. Its last owner died in it." (Hey, I was like 14. That kind of passion is acceptable in the young. :P )

I'm not a fan of full-fur coats, but that's a matter of style more than anything else. If you like it, I would honestly say you should wear the coat. I wouldn't go out and buy new fur, because I think the practises of the fur industry are icky. I have, however, worn vintage clothing that had fur on it (I used to have a gorgeous black jacket from the 20s that had a leopard fur collar). My feeling was that I'd never buy NEW fur, because that would be supporting the fur industry. But when I bought stuff in vintage clothing shops, the animal was long since dead and my purchase wasn't promoting the current fur trade.

If you like it, wear it. Chances are, you'll be left alone. The red paint folks usually target people in places where they're going to get a lot of publicity for doing so, not some normal woman walking down the street.

Since the coat is from the 40's, the foxes would have died a natural death anyway, so the fur in question doesn't matter much.

I tend not to wear apparel that is "controvercial." That's just me, though.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. Aesthetically, I am not against fur. There are good fur designs, and there are bad fur designs. I'm against bad design, not against fur.

Morally, I do not find "killing animal for clothing" any more reprehensible than "killing animal for food," and I eat animal.

I love fur on women. Well, where it is supposed to be anyway.

MP, when I was at uni (not all that long ago.................... ^_^ ) my best friend had a fur coat that she'd found in a thrift store which she wore everywhere & no-body commented or threw paint at it.

Enjoy!

I remember in Iceland I had a coat made of sheepskin shearling.
Very nice.

I remember selecting the material.
They showed me another material that was much softer, and more expensive than what I got.

They said it is made from unborn sheep that are cut out of the mother.
That bothered me.

Gotta draw a line somewhere.

To think another person will get enjoyment, and warmth out of an older fur coat is, IMO, a really good thing. I'd be more upset to see it go in the garbage, or not used anymore.
I, like dol, would not buy a new fur, but would be ok with resurrecting my grandma's (if she had one ^_^ )

I say enjoy it; looks like you are doing it justice, Caroline.
