Seems to me I recall several people around here saying that there were no secret CIA prisons in Europe. IIRC, that was because some of the countries allegedly involved had denied the existence of those prisons.

Who was it? Come on guys, 'fess up.

Because I do believe the Prez yesterday acknowledged the existence of those prisons.

I believe that it was a EU investigation that came to that conclusion. I, quite frankly, never regarded that to be the final word on the matter although it was fun to speculate what the Administration might be up to by leaking false information. I have always been of the opinion that such facilities existed somewhere.

IIRC correctly, the Prez said that KSM and others were detained overseas. Whether the facility in which they were held is a "prison" - you know, lots of guys, guards, towers, etc. I don't believe he said, though I'd have to look at the transcript to be sure.

Just checked: the word "prison" appears twice in his speech. Both times in reference to Guantanamo.

John Hidraker adds:

"President Bush said that a small number of high-value detainees "have been held and questioned outside the United States."

This is not exactly a news flash. We knew that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed et al. were not at Guantanamo, and no one ever imagined that they were inside the U.S. The fact that this handful of top-level terrorists was being held by the CIA, somewhere outside the U.S., has been known and widely reported for years. President Bush declined to add anything to what has already been reported many times:

"Many specifics of this program, including where these detainees have been held and the details of their confinement, cannot be divulged. Doing so would provide our enemies with information they could use to take retribution against our allies and harm our country."

So the AP's headline and lead paragraph, suggesting that the President made some sort of guilty admission, are misleading at best. The President's endorsement of the CIA's program was aggressive and effective, but few Americans will learn about it beyond the handful who watched the speech as it was delivered.

The real news that came out of the speech was that the high-ranking terrorists now in CIA custodyl be transferred to Guantanamo for criminal prosecution, and that the administration is asking Congress to pass comprehensive legislation authorizing military tribunals and protecting American servicemen and CIA employees from prosecution or lawsuits arising out of their interrogations of captured terrorists.

One person a prison makes. And iron bars a cage.

In the meantime, let's hope that we give these guys every chance to prove their innocence. For example, let's let them know exactly what the evidence against them is, so they have a reasonable chance to defend themselves. And then find them guilty, if guilty they be. Because everyone, even KSM, should be given a fair trial before they are hung.

I don't have a problem with them knowing the evidence against them as long as it does not compromise sources or methods or reveal classified information. barring that they should be held in custody until such time as we can be sure it does not.

I think it might be a terrible idea to give detainees any information regarding the collection and use of intelligence and the existence of informants that might have been responsible for their capture.

Oh, and I don't care what is the size of KSM's penis.

One person a prison makes. And iron bars a cage.

No argument, or disagreement.

However, the press jumped all over the "Secret CIA prisons" story right after the press conference, whereas in fact, we know nothing about how, where, or in whose company these men were detained. The fact that "secrete CIA prisons" is the talking point speaks to an assumption of a world-wide, far-flung network of guard towers, etc.

Do they exist?

I don't know.

However, that was not clearly delineated in the President's press conference.

I'm not sure if I ever denied the existence of any secret CIA prison - If the Administration denied it then I probably agreed w/them. If they refused to answer, then I probably said, "Who knows?" I am pretty sure I said that I hope they have them. Seems like a great place to keep these people and interrogate them. I've always scratched my head when ever anyone would say, "Secret CIA prisons - gasp!". Why are we supposed to get worked up over that?
