How Long Will Kenny's Cubicle Dollar Last?

HOLY CARP!!!
I got a dollar in a piece of junk mail today.

The only thing missing from my database is how long will this dollar will remain pinned up on the bulletin board of my cubicle.
Hundreds of people including nightly janitors have access.

On a typical work day perhaps 30 people walk by.

Where is Nina, our resident statistician?

If it was a hundred, I'd vote low. It's a buck. I bet it stays there a while...sort of like those pennies nobody bothers to pick up.

I say 4 days. Enough time for lots of people to see it, and for someone to think, 'well I may as well take it before somebody else does'.

Probably for a very long time. There are tons of things not nailed down in cubicles that could be sold for a dollar, and they never get stolen.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I'm assuming it is gone already.

I think it will stay there until Kenney has to retrieve it due to the liquidity crisis caused by over-investment in pianos.

No, see, you can't pin it up. Anyone who sees that will know that someone posted it there on purpose, and they have knowledge of its location. They won't touch it.

What you SHOULD do, is put it right by your phone or something. In plain sight, but there's also a possibility it was mindlessly put there and won't be missed if taken.

THAT would be a better experiment.

As for your situation, I'd say forever.

It is still there.

I was thinking if it was on the wall outside my cube it would go faster.
If I framed it it would go more slowly.
If I left it on the table it would go a little faster than on my bulletin board.
If it was on my floor it would go the fastest.

Funny how the mind works, since these are really all the same thing - stealing a dollar.

If it were on the floor, would you consider it stealing, or "finding"?
So live your life and live it well.

It may be stealing, but the other people don't know that. If it was on the side of the street, for example, there is no way to get that dollar back to its rightful owner, so you might as well pick it up. The office is different of course.

Anyways yes, rationality is a fun game you play with yourself every day!

Try leaving it by the photocopier or whatever and see if anyone tries to return it...

My time to find the rightful owner is worth more than a dollar, so I'd just leave it there.

I'd just take it! It's not like I'd be totally without scruples. They're trying to counterfeit the dollar!

I have a stack of quarters on my desk that has been there five years. Ditto with some loose Chinese coins on the window sill.

It's still there.

Are you going to camp out overnight to check its progress? :P
Seriously, I'd start downgrading its status after awhile. Put it right in front on your desk, then beside your phone, then on the floor or something... See when it gets snatched.

Or you could start a year long experiment, leaving dollar bills in a variety of places, and see where and after how long, the dollar gets stolen.
