There's been a bit of a debate started regarding the recent 'starred' bad language between AC and Quirt, and whether this should be considered acceptable on the forum. I'm interested in knowing what other people think about this. I'd like to strongly emphasise that I'm not singling out AC or Quirt, both of whom have contributed enormously over the years to making this a fun place to be. It just so happens that this particular free and frank exchange of views was between these two. I'm a moderator of the board, but to be honest this kind of trash talk doesn't really worry me very much, I actually find it quite amusing if I'm honest; I guess I'm easily pleased. I'm actually one of the more regular users of the bad words - I like 'em dirty, just ask anyone. That being said, if every thread devolved into this kind of exchange of insults, things would get very boring, very quickly, and I certainly don't want that to happen. Bad language can actually be quite effective if used sparingly, but it does need to be spare. What think you, cyber people? |

I don't think it's any better than posting the word itself. It's not like the rest of us don't know what letters are being asterisk-ed out. |

I'll say the same thing here that I say to my students. Words are just words - it's intent that matters. If we tell people they can't use starred out obscenities when they are insulting other board members, that doesn't really solve the problem, does it? They'll still insult each other - they'll just use more "accepatable" words to do it. It wouldn't mean less nastiness - it'd just be nastiness in a different form. |

Maybe, dol, but I would rather have the same nastiness and less profanity, wouldn't you? |

Doesn't make any difference to me whether there is profanity or not. The clever can be a lot more insulting without profanity than with it. |

It's not the insults that bother me. Insulting other people over the internet is pretty pathetic IMO. |

I agree dol. Words are words. It is definitely context that matters. I don't understand people being offended by words considered 'curse words'. |

It's like asking why you're right handed or have brown hair. I guess it's in my DNA.

That may be true, Ben. But what it comes down to is that this is a community made up of adults, with very few exceptions. And it certainly caters to an adult audience in subject matter and content. I equate this place to a casual backyard BBQ with 100 people in attendance. Not everyone agrees. Some of us don't even like some of the others. But just like I wouldn't tell people at a backyard BBQ comprised of adults that there was no swearing allowed, I wouldn't want to impose the restriction here. I would be far more likely to tell people it was time to go home if they were being nasty to other people in attendance because they were being nasty - not because they were swearing. |

The thread is the back of the bus thread, but it's not really important. There's loads of threads where naughty words are almost used. As has been pointed out, it doesn't take a curse word to insult. 'Traitor', 'fascist' and even 'wing-nut' are all pretty insulting. Does it matter? Would this place be a better place without the insults? I for one don't believe so. |

It certainly wouldn't be if people were afraid to post anything for fear of moderation. And if we make a "no obscenity" rule, it would have to apply across the board. A recent thread by MP used two obscenities in a manner that didn't insult posters here. We'd have to axe those. And we'd still have the same level of insults - they just wouldn't use the seven words you can't say on television. |

I think it's a moot point because no one's likely to change, especially those who use insults the most. I think it would help cut down on fights between members. I think TNCR is headed to a total meltdown like the CR at PW did and what's going to cause it is some of these insults going a little too far. All it takes is a few nasty threads between the same members at the same time. The one thing in our favor here is that there are not as many members likely to get into the insult matches. |

Ben, Perhaps you're right (though I personally don't believe it). But stopping people from using swearing to get their point across isn't going to change that in the least. |

I agree. If moderators interceded in the total flame threads I think things would be different. John's question seemed to suggest putting a limit on insults so I answered it that way. |

Personally I would be in favor of a thread being killed by a moderator if things got out of hand and there was no longer any political discussion. Does anybody else remember Brendan's method for killing threads?   |

What I find amusing is the selective memory displayed by some who are complaining. Don't toss rocks at others, Ben. You can't claim innocence yourself, you know. |

The most fun I can have while still dressed is to throw extremely bad one-liners into political discussions, generally with little or no thought for the politics of the discussion. If anybody tries to stop me doing that they can go and ***** with their ***** and, furthermore, take a ****** **** at the ****. |
