Be prepared to be disappointed.

I suppose. Truth be known this statement of his is what really ticked me off in the thread:

Yes, he did.

He tried to equate a bus driver's authority with the authority of the captain on a ship.  Idiocy.

I'll say it again- the driver is Captain of his or her ship. Period. The driver is responsible not only for the vehicle but also the security of its cargo be it human or material. It is not idiocy. It is accepted practice.

Although I do not think you to be an idiot, only a moron would dispute the colloquial meaning of the term.

Either accept it as I intended it or shut your festering gob.

It's dumb. As you intended it, it's dumb. You're not dumb, but it's dumb. And you can shut your festering piehole and stop trying to defend dumb.

A bus driver is not a captain of a ship. It's pure stupidity.

In the immortal last words of Timothy McVeigh, 'I am the captain of my ship, I am the master of my fate'.

Both phrases apply here. The first could apply to the bus driver, should they be so well-read, the second to arguing this particular point at the expense of precious moments of life.

It applies very well to a bus driver, Mik. Insofar as he is the master of his own destiny.

In his role as the driver of a school bus, not so much.

Just one example. If a passenger on a boat is unruly, the captain can put him off at the next stop. To secure the safety of the ship.

Exactly how long do you think a bus driver would have his job if he told an unruly student to get off his bus at the next stop?

About as long as it took the parent to call the school district.

I thought the second point was more important, but c'est la vie.

Quirt, you are being ridiculous. Everyone here with half a brain understood exactly what AC was saying the first time he said it. You're making a mountain out of a molehill, and being stubborn just for the hell of it.

No, Larry, I'm not. I honestly believe it was a ridiculous analogy. I honesty believe that, if I'd made an analogy like that, IT (my own personal little stalker) and George would have been all over it.

AC doesn't get called on it because he's on the other side of the spectrum. So be it.

A 'gob' is a sophisticated term for a mouth. I'm not sure what would make it fester.

A common English term, and one of my particular favourite insults, for someone who speaks a lot of, err..., nonsense, shall we say, is a 'gobsh!te'. Notice the 'e', it's very important, it should rhyme with hob-light, and not hob-lit.

Quirt stop it. You're really making yourself look like a jackass. It was a good analogy; clear to everyone but yourself.

Well, then, we have a disagreement. I think you used a ridiculous analogy, and that you look like a jackass for continuing to defend it. The fact that your fan club is willing to defend you really doesn't matter to me.

Quirt, it's got nothing to do with any "fan club", and everything to do with the fact that you are being ridiculous. Sorry. No offense intended. But AC's analogy was clear, and quite common.

On this one, where you're concerned, call it an educated guess.

Where IT is concerned, it's a statistical certainty.
