If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Is it a coincidence that it has been brought up more now when we as a society are growing ever more concerned with obesity? Perhaps it is a strategy of the overweight underground extremists to be able to claim that it is the way of nature to expand.... |

But seriously, I could easily see the earth expanding and possibly contracting over eons. |

I don't claim to be smarter than you, Larry, but these are things that have been part of my studies for the last 6 years. And when I look at all the mechanisms present in evolution, the Cambrian explosion suddenly looks a lot less unlikely through evolutionary mechanisms than when you wouldn't know them. This isn't a matter of intelligence at all. |

Well, excuse the hell out of me. I'm not the one who's running away when he's been proven wrong, mate. And to be honest, it really p*sses me off when I, and others, put time and effort in trying to explain something, and the one who's been found to be wrong, doesn't even have the decency to admit it. Instead, you come over to this thread and start attacking me on something else. |

There is no WAY you could see that because you would have to be in orbit hundreds of miles above the earth PLUS you would have had to be alive for EONS. This is just more typical I've-been-alive-for-eons-and-I-live-in-orbit wingnuttery. |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

Read what Simon Conway Morris has to say on evolution and the Cambrian Explosion. Here is his CV - I'd say he's more qualified to speak on the subject than most |

I'm not running away from anything, sport - and I haven't been "proven wrong", except in your narrow little mind. You may think you've "explained" something - in fact what you have done is closed your tiny little mind, covered your ears, and regurgitated what you *believe* are the answers. Sorry - you don't have the answers. That's why we have this little thing called "discussion". You think there is no discussion needed passed your own determinations of things. And *I* did not attack you - *you* attacked me. And if you don't stop, I'm going to rip you to shreds. |

So, after all the things that I, Moonbat and Nina posted, you still don't believe it is a foregone conclusion among scientists that CFC's have caused major thinning of our ozone layer? |

Excuse me - but I am not acting like a bully, Nunatax is. I have simply engaged in a debate, until Nunatax decided to get pissy. I'm simply giving him back the smartass attitude he has given me. And if you decide to get pissy with me, I'll just bitch slap both of you. I'm not in the mood for any **** out of either of you, so get off my back. |

I was addressing Quirt's attack on David over the fact that volcanoes have an impact on the ozone layer. Maybe you missed it, but the NASA website I mentioned (but forgot to give the link to) proves David was right. I also commented on the fact that scientists refer to the stuff coming out of volcanoes as "aerosols", and noted that not *all* mention of aerosols are in reference to deoderant cans. Nowhere did I say that deoderant can aerosols didn't play a part. Do you think you can now put your attitude of superior intellect away and pay attention? |

And I'm getting tired of your's. David made the point that volcanoes have an effect on the ozone layer. Quirt attacked him and ridiculed him for saying it. I showed that volcanoes *do* have an effect on the ozone layer, and that has apparently pissed you off. So, we end up discussing CFC's. If I gave you the impression that I don't believe CFCs had anything to do with depleting the ozone layer, that wasn't my intention. But CFCs have been largely banned in many products, and with time the CFCs in the stratosphere *will* break down. So we can all relax our sphincter muscles. The ozone layer has naturally occurring holes in it, and this has been the case for eons. That doesn't mean CFCs didn't do any damage, or that we don't have to clean up our act. But it *does* mean that this is a complex subject, as are most subjects, and neither you nor I have a corner on the "answer market". |

Not being a scientist, I really shouldn't be butting into this thread. I haven't a clue as to who's wrong and who's right in this debate. But, this I can agree with.
Aside to Nunatax: It's good to have you around. Missed you. |

And like I pointed out in the other thread, you were talking about other vulcanologists than David was, talking about two completely different theories. Which also means Quirt wasn't wrong either. Cool that we agree on the effect of CFCs. |

Conway Morris doesn't deny evolution. His entire career is based upon something called biological convergence, which is an evolutionary concept. Biological convergence occurs when two different, but unrelated organisms share a common feature. The classic example is the presence of similarly structured eyes in both humans and octopus, who don't share a common evolutionary ancestry. It's actually not that rare. There are many instances where the same biological function gave rise to very similar solutions. The question is whether this occurred independently/randomly or through some goal-directed mechanism (the implication being an intelligent designer). Conway Morris acknowledges that these things evolved, but claims they were not haphazard and not independent--hence they require an intelligent designer. Adaptationists see no inconsistency between independent arrival at similar conclusions--they argue that similar structures developed independently because they had the best selective advantage. Unfortunately, that's where the issue reaches an impasse. There are simply no scientific arguments put forth that support Conway Morris' contention. This is not to say that such arguments may not arise, but it's typically at this juncture that Conway Morris and others start using things like "faith," and other non-scientific arguments. It's at this point, imo, that intelligent designers stop being scientists. But there are thousands of religious believers who are also articulate scientists. Most that I know view their scientific endeavors in part as an exploration to "figure out how God did it." To say "God did it," and think it's a scientific explanation is just illogical. It doesn't make it an invalid explanation, just a non-scientific one. EDIT: Here's what Conway Morris says about the Cambrian Explosion: "To conclude: The Cambrian explosion is real and its consequences set in motion a sea-change in evolutionary history. Although the pattern of evolution is clearer, the underlying processes still remain surprisingly elusive." PNAS - Conway Morris on Cambrian Explosion |
