HOLY CARP!!!
|
I got a call on my cell phone today from a very irate woman who insisted that she had gotten repeated calls over the past few days from my number. Most hanging up, but a couple asking for people who aren't at her number. I told her that I'm the only one with access to my cell phone, and that I hadn't made any such calls. She didn't believe that I hadn't called her. I insisted that I had not, and that there is no way anyone else had. She asked for my name and I refused to give it to her. She got quite angry. I hung up. I called my cell phone company and explained the situation. They checked over my records, and I was able to tell them every call I had made on my cell since the beginning of August (not a lot), and the records matched with what I told her. What's more, there are no repeated numbers on their records. So obviously I didn't make the calls, and no one has figured out how to clone the number to make calls with my number, or it would show up in their records. The number that this woman called from came up on caller ID as "Restricted" (which Soak believes is equivalent to the US "Private Number"). I got another "Restricted" phone call last night at midnight, from someone who didn't say anything when I answered. What say you? Is this some odd scam? Is there much you can do with a cell number and a name (if I were silly enough to give it to her)? Any ideas? |

Weird, but could she just have been mistakenly dialing your number? |

Treat as a scam or set up for a scam. The irate behavior followed by questions about you are intended to keep you on the line as long as possible and extract as much information as possible. This should be brought to the attention of the police. I would would start with the commerical crime unit. |

ZOOOOOM!

Sounds to me like the irate woman got the number wrong (the one who's been harassing her). Either that, or she's simply crazy. |

Kincaid - I wondered that as well, but when I asked her what number she dialed, she told me, so if she was mistaken, she decided not to let that slip. Also, the call I got at midnight last night, also from a restricted number (I've never had that come up on my caller ID before) makes me think she tried to call me about it last night as well. Would she dial the same mistaken number twice? AC - I'm inclined to think it may be some sort of scam as well, but it seems like there isn't a lot of information to go on. Though perhaps if I had given my name, she would have continued to ask questions? Also - do you really think I should call the cops about it? It seems like something so small and silly, I can't imagine they would be able to do anything about it anyways. |

Whenever someone calls me and asks "Who's this?" my response is "Who is this?" Ditto for wrong numbers. "What number is this?" is answered by "What number were you calling?" If it's my number they were dialing, then I explain that no one by that name is here. Otherwise, a polite "You have the wrong number. Sorry." Click. |

To quote Goldfinger "once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times Mr. Bond, is enemy action." It's up to you whether to call the cops but just note if a pattern begins to emerge over the next couple days. In any case don't stay on the line any longer than is necessary to disconnect. |

Dol, I think she just honestly made a mistake. Either a technical glitch on her end, or a mental one. |

If I had your ph# and your name I probably could find out where you live. I might even get your name before I called. I might have got your address from driving thru the neighborhood and w/the wonderful internet been able to get your name and ph#. If you didn't answer the phone the second time, might someone come over to burgle your home? |

I'd say it's even odds that it's a scam setup or a woman who's simply transposed digits when writing down a number from her Caller ID. Either way, after talking nicely to her for a minute or two, if she kept it up I'd tell her to pound sand, and if she made another harrassing call to you, you'd get the phone company involved.
My response to that question is similar. I learned it from an old Little Rascals episode. "Who is this?!!" "How many guesses do I get?"

When I was a teenager my parents phone would ring and I would immediately pick it up and say "Hello is John Smith there please". Invariably the caller would be caught off guard and reply "No, sorry you have the wrong number" and hang up. The smart ones would call back a minute later and say, "Hello AlbertaCrude, this is John Smith, any phone messages for me?" |
