You are stranded on a tropical desert island for an undetermined length of time. You've been in a ship accident and washed up on shore in an inflatable life raft with just the clothes on your back and the emergency pack stored with the raft. The items in the emergency kit are: first aid kit w/the usual stuff batteryless flashlight (hand crank type) 4 bottles of water 2 blankets matches 120 hour candle mirror 28 emergency food bars (3500 calories each) From time to time flotsam and jetsam from the shipwreck wash up on shore -- what three things would you want washed up the most? Assume that there is a reliable source of potable water on the island, a reasonable amount of coconut palms (see here for all the uses of coconut: http://ambergriscaye.com/cocopalms/uses.html) and an unlimited supply of fish/shellfish from the sea. What other three sources of food would you have on this island? Why? What three books would you want to have? What three personal care items? You can have up to three companions wash up in the same raft. Who are they? Have fun with this. I tried to make it so that you would have to really think about your answers. I believe these sorts of challenges help us to understand ourselves better. |

My two best friends, for amusement. And Marisa Tomei, for ... amusement. As for the other questions, if those three people are there, whatever the heck they want is fine with me. ![]() |

And my thoughts/answers: You are stranded on a tropical desert island for an undetermined length of time. First, I would want a really good knife, then a deck chair, like a chaise so I could sit with good back support, and third, a packed suitcase so I would have additional clothes and shoes. Why? Orange trees. The oranges would prevent scurvy and provide potassium, calcium and vitamin C. They also taste good. Nuts. Additional protein source. Potatoes or beans. Starchy veggie with fiber. What three books would you have? A book containing the works of Plato. Would keep my mind busy for a long, long time. A book containing the complete works of Shakespeare OR one on Greek mythology. Either one provides exceptional entertainment value. Lastly, for selfish reasons, a teaching volume on music theory. What three personal care items? For me, this is difficult. Like, I want ALL my stuff! But...I whittled down to these: a toothbrush, a wide tooth comb (sturdier and less likely to break) and a pair of nail clippers. You can have up to three companions wash up in the same raft. Who are they? A doctor to take care of everyone if the need arose, a teacher in an area of expertise that I am unfamiliar with who would share that knowledge, and a botanist that would know what plants are safe to eat or are useful in other ways.

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

first aid kit w/the usual stuff batteryless flashlight (hand crank type) 4 bottles of water 2 blankets matches 120 hour candle mirror 28 emergency food bars (3500 calories each) From time to time flotsam and jetsam from the shipwreck wash up on shore -- what three things would you want washed up the most? A clarinet case including all the stuff to maintain it (heck, if I'm going to have all that time, I might as well do something with it) Can I have my iPod? Please? An axe or large knife What other three sources of food would you have on this island? Why? Garlic (for flavouring) Rice (good carb, versatile, goes well with seafood) Some manner of citrus fruit (vit c, warding off scurvy, and there's an awful lot you can do with citrus and seafood) What three books would you want to have? The Lord of the Rings (trilogy in one volume - that's not cheating, right?) Complete works of Shakespeare (lots to read there) Not Wanted on the Voyage, just cause it's my favourite What three personal care items? Toothbrush Razor Nailfile You can have up to three companions wash up in the same raft. Who are they? Mister Soak Two strong guys who are really good at (and really enjoy) building stuff and doing the manual labour. Tee hee. |
