Wisdom teeth; How bad will it be?

HOLY CARP!!!
So I have to get two wisdom teeth extracted. I met with the oral surgeon, and he said we have to do it in hospital (out-patient), likely under a general (won't know for sure until we meet with the anaesthetist). One of the teeth is lying sideways in my gums, and he said it looks like the nerves may get in the way, and that there are some issues with it being in my jaw bone. Ick.

So how bad will it be? Should I book a couple days off of work (keep in mind that I'm a teacher so sitting at a desk quietly isn't an option)? I know that I can ask for opinions when I talk to the hospital, but I like to hear anecdotal experience.

I had mine our under General.
I'd schedule the oral surgery for a Friday and schedule Monday and Tuesday off.

But I'm a wimp.

i had two non-impacted and two impacted removed years ago. the non-impacted were quick, and the impacted didn't take too long (but weren't very tough to get at either). no general for me. i just remember having to change the gauze at the back of my mouth a couple of times in the hours after the procedure. i think i had some nice painkillers too. i thought a day off after was warranted for mine.

since your sideways tooth involves your jaw bone and nerves, two days off does sound like a good idea.

liquids are good for the first day or so of healing (they told me no straws), and margaritas are more fun to sip than milkshakes.

thanks for finding ben's thread!

my only recent dental procedure was my first root canal a few weeks ago. my primary dentist gave me vicodin and sent me to the endodontist for the procedure. the endodontist gave me percocet, in case the vicodin didn't get me through the weekend.

once the shots wore off, i went straight for the stronger percocet. i took one, and my mouth still hurt some . . . so since the bottle said i could take 1 - 2, i took a second one. i was sitting next to steve on the sofa, and all of a sudden i felt like i was on the fast train to lights out. so with crazy wide eyes, i said to steve, "i have to lie down now!" and stumbled to the bedroom. very funny!

i found out the following monday that i was popping pain pills because of an infection -- i didn't need any more once i started the antibiotics.

Hmmm...I read the thread, but the only wisdom I found (Ha! I slay me!) was that some people had no problems and could work the next day, and others mentioned people who needed a week to recover.

What to do? What to do?

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
I suppose a joke relating it to going through piercings would be in bad taste. Tempting, but altogether wrong.

Good luck with this.. I think how bad it will be will depend on how much damage they have to do to get the teeth out, hopefully very little.

May it pass quickly. And keep Soak out of your pain meds.

I only had one, non-impacted wisdom tooth removed. It was fairly painful the first day. I had a painkiller, but I was going to a picnic in the afternoon and was afraid to drink and drug so I elected to drink and didn't use the drug. By the next day, the pain was much less.

The one thing I remember was how my tongue kept wandering into that hole in the back of my mouth. It took a very long time for that to heal in flush with the surrounding gum.

Can you have the procedure on a Fri.? That's when I had all my gum surgery procedures, and wisdom teeth removals.

Discuss the expected recuperation with the doc. Also, discuss the probability of possible nerve damage based on where your wisdom teeth are. Everyone is different, and every procedure is somewhat different.

Good luck.

Yeah - my plan is to do it on a Friday. Mister Soak said he'd like to come here to take me to the hospital and hang out with me after so I have someone to distract me. So a Friday would be good for both of us.

The doc said that there is the possibility of nerve damage, as the nerve shows in the x-ray as running across the tooth. But he said he can't really know til he gets in, just that there's a possibility.

Also, even if it's not true, tell the doctor you're a baby when it comes to pain. He'll prescribe good stuff for you. When I had mine out - 3 at once, one impacted, but it was done in the dentist chair anyway under a local - he gave me tylenol, which didn't even touch the pain. The second day was better though.

Dol,
I had mine done at 28. I took 4 days off work. Get yourself a hefty Rx for Tylenol #3's. Take them every 4 hrs for the first 24hrs. Follow the post procedure directions! Do lots of fluids. Ease up on the drugs on days 2 & 3 (say, every 6-8-12 hrs). Save the remaining pills for the day when you really need a fix (like for PAIN) but can't find a doc who'll do ya. No oral stuff for a week (Sorry Soak :( ). No smoking, daquiris (alcohol) or strong sucking at straws either :( (promotes bleeding of the fossas).

[I'm retired, I can say this stuff]

My dad has permanent nerve damage from his wisdom teeth. Lost all feeling on one side of his chin/jaw. He's fine with it! You can't at all tell of course, and neither can he. ...until he looks into a mirror and finds out he cut himself shaving or something.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Better safe than sorry, Dol. I know people who needed a full week to recover, and if it's bad, you really REALLY don't want to be hanging out with the kids while you're in pain.

dol, I had my two (both impacted) removed at the hospital as well, when I was about 30. I had booked 2 or 3 days off, but really one was enough. Because of your possible nerve damage, I would say you really should count on at least 3 days.
I like Katie's advice about having some major pain killers around if you need them.
I'd forgotten about the no straw thing; you don't want to blow those stitches!

When I had mine done the anesthetist gave me propofol. All I remember was having one the most intense orgasms ever in the recovery room. Great stuff IMO :)

Ugh. Well, thanks for the advice, all. I'm going to try to book my appointment for a Friday (not sure how much leeway I'll have there), and then I'll let my principal know that I'll try to be back for the Monday, but I'll have my daybook done just in case, and let her know on Sunday how I'm feeling.

If I have to get them done on another day, then I'll take two days off, with an option to call in for more if need be.

On one hand, it's hard to take days off as a teacher, because it's not like your job can just wait til you get back. On the other, it's nice that I can call in and have a supply come in for me at the last minute if need be. They also give us far more sick days than I'll ever use, and my current principal is very supportive of us taking the time we need for whatever arises.

Dol, professional opinion here.

Dental extractions are a medical procedure, not all that far removed from real surgery. Therefore, you should take care of youself as much as possible after the operation. That means no cooking, cleaning, housework, baby-sitting, work outside the home, running errands, or for that matter, even getting out of bed for at least three to four months. Remember, this is all about you, and you have to prioritize. I'm sure that Soak will understand.

After three or four months, you can begin to resume your normal activities, gradually adding one thing at a time, one per month. So, after a month, you may want to go to the grocery store (but not cook until the second month is over). After the third month, light loads of laundry may be appropriate, etc. At the end of a year, you should be able to resume all normal activities. But, until then, why risk it, eh?

Take it from me, I'm a doctor.

I'll write a note if you'd like.

That's excellent advice, George! Though it means I'll have to postpone my surgery until Soak gets his butt to Canada, cause he's not going to be much help from Boston!

(he is, however, talking about flying in when I get my teeth taken out so he can distract me from being miserable :) )
