Fake But Accurate?; Reuters Photoshops Beirut

Smoke billows from burning buildings destroyed during an overnight Israeli air raid on Beirut’s suburbs August 5, 2006. Many buildings were flattened during the attack. REUTERS/Adnan Hajj

This Reuters photograph shows blatant evidence of manipulation. Notice the repeating patterns in the smoke; this is almost certainly caused by using the Photoshop “clone” tool to add more smoke to the image.

It’s so incredibly obvious, it reminds me of the faked CBS memos. Smoke simply does not contain repeating symmetrical patterns like this, and you can see the repetition in both plumes of smoke. There’s really no question about it.

If you're right, and I have to say it does look kind of blatant, apart from anything else you've got to wonder what opinion Reuters have of the intelligence of their readership.

Not enough smoke, can you pump that up some?

Sure, boss, it's easy.

And the latest LGF update. Here's a photo of roughly the same location (it includes more of the cityscape to the left than seen in the Reuters image), from Associated Press on July 26 - ten days before the Reuters image was supposedly taken.

Posted Image

Note that the Reuters picture, of the exact same location, shows buildings that aren't in the July 26 photo. Now, with the Israeli bombing, I might accept a picture that shows fewer buildings than ten days before, more? Those are some pretty fast builders. ^_^

Again, the Reuters-issued image ( I can only call it an "image," I can't bring myself to call it a "photograph"):

And the AP photo, ten days before:

And a detail overlay of the same locations in the two images:

Of course, making things worse, the Reuters image was credited to the same photographer recently accused of staging images in Qana, where an Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of 28 civilians. Yep, everyone who takes issue with mainstream media outlets is obviously a conspiracy kook.

If you want to really see some interesting stuff, read about "Green Helmet Man" and how Hezbullah staged many of the photos from the Qana bombing.

Notice the "Apology."

What is the "proper" use of photo editing software in a news organization?
We'll show you what really happened pretty soon (and we expect you to believe us this time.
We're sorry for the 'inconvenience,' but we're not sorry that we did it, or at least that we allowed it, or at least that we're such idiots that our editors didn't catch it.

Reuters admits to doctoring Beirut photo

Reuters news agency admitted on Sunday that it had digitally altered a photograph of an Israeli attack on Lebanon on Saturday, showing more smoke than was actually present.

The photograph, as initially published, showed an aerial view of Beirut after an IAF attack, with two large pillars of smoke rising over the city. The caption read: Smoke billows from burning buildings destroyed during an overnight Israeli air raid on Beirut's suburbs.

The agency has since withdrawn the photograph, issued an apology and released the unaltered picture. Its public relations department said the photographer had been suspended until the investigation was completed.

Reuters was notified of the alteration by American bloggers who noticed repeating patterns within the smoke plumes, indicating that part of the image was duplicated several times.

The scene was photographed by Adnan Hajj, who had also photographed the aftermath of the Israeli attack on Kana last week, in which the Lebanese initially claimed 58 fatalities, but could later only confirm 28.

Seems like Reuters is a Hizbollah press agent. Truly disgusting.

"Reuters takes such matters extremely seriously as it is strictly against company editorial policy to alter pictures."

Why they're so strict about it, they still haven't found it in their hearts to fire the guy.... merely "suspend" him... and this at the second offense, if I've got the story straight.

And the guy who broke the story, Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs gets a death threat from someone with a Reuters IP address:

Reuters employee issues 'Zionist pig' death threat

Worker suspended after telling American blogger: 'I look forward to day when you pigs get your throats cut'

Yaakov Lappin

A Reuters employee has been suspended after sending a death threat to an American blogger.

The message, sent from a Reuters internet account, read: "I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut."

It was sent to Charles Johnson, owner of the Little Green Footballs (LGF) weblog, a popular site which often backs Israel and highlights jihadist terrorist activities.

In the threat, the Reuters staff member, who has not been named, left his email address as "zionistpig" at hotmail.com.

Reporting the message to his readers, Johnson wrote on his website: "This particular death threat is a bit different from the run of the mill hate mail we get around here, because an IP lookup on the sender reveals that he/she/it was using an account at none other than Reuters News."

Speaking to Ynetnews, Johnson said: "I was surprised to receive a threat from a Reuters IP, but only because it was so careless of this person to use a traceable work account to do it."

He added: "I think it's more than fair to say that Reuters has a big problem."

After bringing the threat to the attention of Reuters, Johnson was told by the news organization's Global Head of Communications, Ed Williams: "I can confirm that an employee has been suspended pending further investigation. The individual was not an employee of Reuters' news division."

In an additional twist, Johnson traced the movements of the sender of the threat, and found direct parallels between the internet locations of the sender and Inayat Bunglawala, Media Secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Bunglawala, who contirbuted an editorial to the Guardian website, has attracted negative attention in the past after making anti-Semitic outbursts, and has declared that the British media was "Zionist-controlled."

In the comment section of the Guardian, underneath his own editorial, Bunglawala denied sending the threat, blaming "Zionists" instead.

"That was not me! Methinks some Zionists are up to mischief," he wrote.

"There is strong circumstantial evidence connecting Bunglawala to the threat, but there is no way for me to verify this for certain. Only a Reuters network administrator would have access to the necessary records," Johnson said.
