The problem with the "Bible and Homosexuals" thread is that they keep doing all that parsing of quotes so that each sentence has an individual answer.  Pretty fancy stuff.  But it's way too time consuming to figure all of that out.

You're much better off here.

Indeed it's an awful lot of mumbo-jumbo leading up to a conjecture as to how many poofters can dance on the head of a pin.

They posted the formula over there:

"Poofters dance on the head of a pin at the rate of 9.8 ms^-2."

Though here seems to be a helpful formula that I found over there:
"an object falls to the ground accelerating at the rate of 9.8 ms^-2"

I have no idea if it's true or not but it seem quite profound.

It's more than just a good idea -- its the LAW!

Only if you believe in such things. Personally I think Moonbat was talking about poofters.

It is a thread about homosexuality after all. :D

As for the purported offensiveness of the thread, I've spent enough time with evangelicals (if alumi of Biola count) to see the humor in this. Dewey would have some more credibility for his outrage if he didn't also posted things like Pope Makes Sweeping Changes. But I realize I cannot be objective in this dispute, and indeed none of us can. What is funny or insulting to any of us is just due to electrochemical reactions -- no one's fault -- it's just physics.

Well Ivory, I can't get that link to open, but if memory serves, it was made in response to a discussion that you & I had been engaged in, and it was made to make a point specific to that discussion. It wasn't an out-of-the-blue attack on Catholicism, nor, if I'm remembering it's content, was it intended to demean Catholics in general.

I don't make posts referring to "damned Catholics." I don't continually bash any other type of Christian who isn't my particular stripe. Others here seem to do so with regularity.

Kenny, you asked me if you'd make the same post, if I'd have replied differently. Yes, I would have. Not because I "like" or "dislike" you or Rick. Because, as a non-Christian, you are not required to hold in regard the instructions that the Christian scriptures give to believers in how to treat one another. Rick, as a Christian, is expected to. That's the difference.

That's okay. People in this thread have told me that it's okay to insult people just because they might be in a majority, or they might be powerful, or they might have money. It's okay to insult them if it makes some other people laugh.

It's okay to insult them if they're not like us.

What would happen if I were to start a series of threads that made comments just as insulting to

Catholics
Gays
Lesbians
Atheists
Liberals
Conservatives
Polish immigrants
Blacks
Southerners
Northerners
Californians
Lawyers

Don't worry, all the comments would be worded as jokes, so they would count as "social satire."

When a group is actively discriminated against there is a difference. It's the reason that Limey jokes are more acceptable than N-jokes. I haven't noticed a whole lot of anti-Christian discrimination in the US, despite what I've heard.

It's probably hard to see the nuances of this but particularly in the South where I was born... :sing:

Christians (and I dislike this description because there are many, many people who are Christians who are denominational Protestants and Catholics) and including Baptists have reason to feel they have been discrminated against in this country. Whether the US should become a theocracy is a different matter entirely.

I viewed the original piece as based on religion and personally I know many, many Baptists, far too many to not see how hurtful this might have been to them if they had read it.

I suppose it is satire but it is also mixing politics and religion in a way that I don't see as bigoted but definitely generalizing. If you don't like someone mixing politics and religion and insulting you, it is probably not the best strategy to do it yourself.

I hope this viewpoint isn't seen as throwing a wet blanket on fun, but I wanted to be up front about my impression and the reasons why I think others might feel the same. :)

Edit: I meant non-denominational Christians and Baptists.

Dewey,

The only truly ethical answer to that question is:

Catholics NO
Gays YES
Lesbians YES
Atheists YES
Liberals YES
Conservatives NO
Polish immigrants NO
Blacks YES
Southerners YES
Northerners NO
Californians YES
Lawyers YES

Seems to me people are pretending to be offended to get at Rick. The only problem with his post is that it is by no means the best satire from the Landover site. The piece is a one-note joke. The piece on how Catholics really worship Mary is much better. (Look for yourself!)

http://www.landoverbaptist.org/sermons/dangcatholics.html

Anyway, here is a joke from this mornings WSJ (inside a commentary on the Gibson saga):

An elderly Jewish man is vacationing in Vienna. He is at the train station. He asks someone there, "Are you anti-semitic?" The lady says, "No, of course not!" He asks another traveler, "Are you anti-semitic?" The man says, "No, I am not!!" Finally, he asks another man, "Are you anti-semitic?" He says, "Yes, I am. Damn Jews!!" The elderly Jewish man says, "At last an honest person!! Would you please watch my luggage while I use the restroom?"

I am not offended much less pretending to be- that's funny!

The piece was offensive for reasons Dewey has mentioned and I have commented on- the difference
between making a joke about someone's religion and making a joke of a religious group seems to have
been lost.

Rick hasn't offended me at all- it's the judgment and taste involved in this example I questioned.

I've said my peace in a blunt way and in a diplomatic way and that's about all I can say- nothing
personal.

Jeffrey, you're exactly right. I was keeping my mouth shut because there was already enough tempest in this thread...but what I wanted to say was...If you want to laugh at Baptist women, *I* will write you something that's really funny! There's plenty to laugh at (I'm a funny old broad, doncha think?)...I just don't think that piece had enough basis in reality to be truly funny. In fact...I write this sort of thing all the time, for those of us who enjoy poking fun at ourselves.

I could probably make fun of my own religion.

How many Methodists does it take to whitewash a church? Three.
One to use a paintbrush and two to look on with disdain.

Thanks. I'll be here all night.

Methinks Dewey wouldn't have been so taken aback if this article was posted by someone other than Rick??????

See, that was the only problem I had with this post. All the rest was way off base, but this was the one line that was truly offensive. Wanna call somebody stupid? Ok. Wanna joke about them being prudish? Ok. Wanna joke about creationism? Not a problem. Want to imply that Baptists are child beaters?

That's a problem.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Dewey, are you really suggesting we can't tell jokes laughing at other people? I don't know you well, but I think I know you well enough to know you've got a pretty good sense of humour.

I suspect that many of us would have no problem at all laughing at jokes made at the expense of the groups you mentioned, as long as we can be sure that the joke is just that and only that. As long as we know that there's no vitriol behind it, there's no hidden disdain, if it's just a joke, then it's funny. The problem is, we can't always be sure.

My opinion, in fact I believe that it's more than just an opinion, I'm absolutely bloody sure, the funniest jokes of all are the ones where we laugh at ourselves. This is handy, because I've got a lot of material.

My final thought for the evening, after three large glasses of Bruichladdich. Eric Morecambe, one of the funniest people to ever walk the earth, said that if you have to analyse humour, then it isn't funny.

Anyway, this drunk Limey goes into a bar.....
