HOLY CARP!!!
Here is the email trail:

Hello,

I will like to enquire if your piano is still up for sale and will like you to give me detail information with your last price for i can compare it what i have already.
Always
Belina Walmont

Dear Belina:
The BB is still for sale.

I strongly recommend you do more than compare price.
The quality and condition of pianos can vary widely.
One piano can easily be worth only half what another apparently "identical" piano is worth.
Very very few pianos are optimized to its full potential and taken care of correctly.

You are welcome to play and inspect the piano in my home.
I am negotiable on the price.
I am in (I give my city).
I have a piano technician coming over at 1:00 PM today to install a dammpchaser humidity control system in my new piano.
You are welcome to stop in to see the BB.
Call me at home if interested and would like to arrange a time to play the M+H.

Where did you see the ad?

Thanks,

Kenny (Last name)

HOLY CARP!!!
When I call her what should I ask her to qualify her?
I was thinking:
What kind of piano are you playing now?
What other brands have you looked at?
At this price why are you not looking at Steinways?
Do you play?

I can't imagine anyone but a knowledgeable player would consider a BB, considering the price.
You can get a piano that looks just like mine way under 10K if you don't play.

Also, the price is still officially 42K.
What should I tell her is my "final" price?

Probably a good way to approach it, Kenny. Try to get to know more about her first.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

If she is Asian (and I'm jumping to conclusions but my gut instinct is usually correct) the only thing she is interested in is the price. She's not going to answer any of your questions. She's educated herself on prices and probably does have the money.

If the price is low enough she'll let you know if she's interested.

I wouldn't get excited about this one.

I already gave my real (but unlisted) home and work phone.

:mad2:

But not my address. Whew!

In the future with their phone number I can pay 20 bucks or so to get some info about them using my visa card and those online reverse directories.

Worth it?

Probably not worth it. You probably won't get any info thru these sites.

Just ask us and we'll tell you if it passes the sniff test.

Never trust or do business with anyone who uses the awful pseudo-word "cos," or its even more disgusting cousin, "coz." Using that phrase makes anyone immediately sound like an idiot.

And based on the email history, I'd tell this person my "last price" is 42K. If she wrote back demanding you adjust your price, tell her "OK, now it's 43."

The person will send a cashier cheque for 50K and will ask for the change to be sent back via Western Union.

Kenny, I'd pass on that one.

If I may, in the future, get a phone number from them first, then, when you actually get a live person on the other end, it's less risky to give them your number(s).

I wouldn't budge on the price at all, and if I did(and that's a big IF), it wouldn't be until I was face to face with them with their money in hand. Don't give away too much(if anything) too soon.

I'm of the opinion of selling things for what they're worth, nothing more, nothing less.

PS. Still working on finding you a buyer. :)

I'm thinking Klotz has it right. Since she's probably a fraud. You could tell her that you turned down 39,000 (don't mention it was lire) - and that your final price is $40K.

If you have her phone number you can do a reverse lookup and at least find out where she's calling from--if from a residence or some other unusual location, perhaps.

But she seems a bit goofy. And no one buys a $42K piano in a rush, without an inspection. How is she going to inspect your piano (herself or with a tech) if she's going on an "overseas assignment" this weekend? And who buys a big piano just before they're going on an "overseas assignment"?

I'd like to think she may just be language impaired, but I doubt it.

Trust no one when you sell your piano. Don't release it until you have a cleared $42K in your bank account. You might want to set up an escrow bank account specifically for this transaction only.

This is a free reverse directory. The first three I think require pmt but scroll down to the next four and those are free, as are, I believe, the ones that follow. I use this to find people. Often ph#'s won't show up (and no cell#'s either).

If she gives you a name, look it up here.

This site even found me, and we try to be as unlisted as possible. Probably does some kind of real estate search that got our current address.

Well, I spend some time as a (novice) scambaiter. Just finished a love affair with one "Grace Martins" from Cote d'Ivoire. By this time I was supposed to get 27.3 million dollars and "she" is still running to the Western Union office to check for my money transfer.

Meanwhile I found a funny one:

He has disclose to me a personal savings which he has managed to put together to run the up coming election before it sudden stroke of 4th January 2006.

Following the significant stroke suffered by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in January 2006, a decision was reached by the Israeli Cabinet, under the advice of the Attorney General of Israel: if the Prime Minister becomes incapable of making decisions, power is transferred to the Deputy Prime Minister ? at the time, Ehud Olmert ? who then becomes Acting Prime Minister until the Prime Minister recoves. If the Prime Minister is declared permanetly incapacitated then the Acting Prime Minister remains in office for 100 days. Once that period expires the President of Israel oversees the process of assembling a new governing coalition If the Prime Minister dies the Cabinet chooses a new Prime Minister.

In the case of Sharon's illness, however, he has been declared permanently incapciatated and elections has already occured.

Thus, the need for the fund transfer. He has given me the order to look for a reliable personnel of your calibre to assist him in reprofiling a certain amount of funds which is undisclose at the moment.

As soon as I get your willingness and confidentiality to forge ahead in executing this transaction, I will let you into confidential information on how to execute the transaction.

Meanwhile, Be aware that the percentage sharing of the fund will be divided in this manner, 30 % will go to me and you will get the same 30% . The wife and children goes with 30% while 10% is used for any expenses we may incurred in the process of transfering the funds to your account.

Thus, I am thanking you in advance for your cooperation in finalising with this transaction swiftly.

It struck me that the names Walmont and Belina both sounded pretty uncommon for the U.S. I don't think I've ever heard either name ascribed to a person in the U.S.

Walmont sounds angloish or Western European, Belina has a more Eastern or Central European sound to it.

I have one of those pgms in my computer that has the phone book for the whole U.S.. I plugged in "Walmont" in California, Oregon, and Washington and came up with not one listing.

OTOH I got a lot of hits on the web for a Hotel Walmont- in Africa. And hits for other places with that name on other continents.

I plugged "Belina" into Yahoo and got nothing really that looked like a person's name.

Belina Walmont seems to me like a name someone might make up.

Kenny, your comment about being on hold made me think- there are scammers who will entice you to call innocent-seeming numbers that turn out to have a VERY high per-minute charge if you call it. It's a scam in partnership with the phone co.

PM or email me, my thinking is if they were sophisticated enough to break into those kinds of communications, they wouldn't be wasting their time on weak sounding scams.

Yup, got the exact same kinda thing when I sold something on Craigslist.

Clear signs I've literally seen from 3 different scams from 3 different online listings:

1) They can't spell
2) They are leaving or aren't available to pick it up themselves
3) They want your name and address

SCAM.
