HOLY CARP!!!
|
I have been running on a shared T-1 for the past 5 years. My bandwidth was restricted during the day because 2 other businesses were sharing the same connection. This morning my new T1 was activated and it goes right to the backbone in Madison. I am full throttle now baby! TNCR is so much faster today then yesterday! Now I can waste time here about 3 times as fast!!!

And, Sir Übergeek, how fast is it? I have cable and I routinely go 5-6 megabytes. Up here, across the Cheddar Curtain®, it's DSL at a pokey 1.5.

That 1.544 Mbps bidirectional is very pricey I'll bet. |

You are still on a shared connection with cable. DSL is about the same or maybe a little faster than a T-1 depending on your location and the type offered but that is only downlink. Uplink is typically less than half of that. The average user downloads much more than they upload but if you upload a lot of data then a T-1 really starts to make sense. Also, Mark has a dedicated connection to the backbone which means their are no bottlenecks past the CO. |

I know that cable is a shared connection, but the experience that people at work have had is that even under peak times (early evening), it's still faster than DSL. That's been my experience as well. I upload at about 1.5, which is when I use my iDisk, is plenty fast. |

I am sure it compares quite favorably with DSL most of the time. The cable companies have gotten much better at managing their bandwidth in recent times. BTW, my download is typically 1.5 Mbps but I am only a few thousand wire feet from the CO. My upload is around 800. |

About like any standard telco circuit switched line. |

All three forum sites are now instantaneous response. Apple's site just snaps to the screen. I host email, web sites etc. The reliability and consitency of bandwidth is what is important. No, I will never download at 4mbps but A T1 is about as bullet proof as you can get. It costs $325/month. That's the part that hurts. |

I had cable in my old apartment and it was usually around 1.6 mbps. I have DSL in my new apartment and it's awful. Like 300 kbps. |

Here in the boondocks, a screaming 26.6 kps dial up. Too far out for cable or DSL. Maybe satellite, but that is pretty expensive.

Ahh yes, I still remember clearly the ol' 28.8 modem I had when I first got onto the interweb. Actually, a 14k was my first. Got the job done at the time. 600 baud! I thought I had it made, getting appz through the local library's BBS. ![]() My goodness how internet technology has taken off. It's amazing. |

![]() When I first got my T1 5 years ago they were going for about $1,500 / month. Mine cost $600 because I was sharing it. I have cut the cost in half and I am gettting way better performance. |

Well I don't know if a 14.4 was on the "cutting edge" back in 1989, but well, that's what we had. My first computer was an Apple IIe, if that tells you anything. Oh yeah, and I still program in FORTRAN 77. Seriously, that's what we use! |
