Me: "Do you know how hot it was yesterday?"

Everyone at the same time: "How...hot....was...it?"

Me: "I came out to my car after work, which had been sitting in the sun all day, and literally the rearview mirror had melted off. You know the part of the mirror that sticks to the inside of your windshield? That connection part got so hot that the glue holding it there melted and so the rearview mirror was just hanging there by the electronic wire! I went to Home Depot (with my rearview mirror dangling there the whole ride) and got some rearview mirror-specific glue and fixed it this morning when it wasn't that hot out yet. So weird!"

Here's a picture of it, while I was driving to Home Depot:

I got one.

It was so hot, I took a lukewarm shower today. Not by choice; there was no cold water. I mean, not at all. Peewater warm was the best I could get it to. It was nasty.

Well I did turn on the cold water in my sink today and it came out slightly warm, tolerable, but warmer than usual.

Question though...you said you took a lukewarm shower. Why would you want more cold water? Lukewarm is kinda nasty - I like very warm (but not hot) showers. Were you trying to take a cold shower or somethin?

Yeah, I tried for a cold shower since I knew I'd just be sweating for the rest of the day. Funny thing is, the longer I had the water on, the warmer it got. So eventually it was even more than lukewarm, and I didn't even touch the hot water.

HOLY CARP!!!
89th, that rearview mirror meltdown has happened to us several times. I can't remember how long ago, but one summer it happened several times. We have also had car windows crack from the heat.

We had rain; it's much nicer today.

Deb, I had no idea it could happen - and was totally shocked, but it sounds like it's not too rare of a problem in 100+ degree heat. I always try to park in the shade anyway...

leave your car windows open about a 1/2 inch too...that will allow them to expand without cracking (saith the voice of unfortunate experience)

right now, it's a blessed 72 degrees!

We had the mother of all thunderstorms last night - some very big trees came down in our area, including one in the lot next to ours. It seemed to be pretty localised, the next town along got next to nothing.

I thought today was going to be cooler. It isn't, much. :help:

Arizona hot weather driving tips:

1) Always leave your car window open a crack when you park.
2) Always have towels available to sit on.
3) Use an oven mitt when you have to use the gearshift.
4) If there's shade, park in it. It doesn't matter if it's a mile away from your destination.
5) Never, ever leave anyone in your car while you "just run in" for an errand.
6) Roll down the windows before you turn off your car to pump gas if your kids are with you.
7) Start the car, get the A/C going, then put on your seat belt.
8) Never, ever leave food in your car. That includes pet food. :darthno:
9) Use those windshield sun screen thingies.

Back when I was doing delivery, my car would just sit outside and BAKE in the afternoon. I had this routine of walking about the car twice; once to open all the doors, and once to close them all. It was a fairly small sedan, but still; it brought everything down to the outside temperature in just a few seconds.

Still do it today, but luckily just about every parking spot at work has shade.

 That's a good idea!

Everyone over here was complaining about the heat, and when it rained all day a few days ago, everyone wanted the sun back...the weather just can't win, huh?
And how are you today?

Actually, I'd gladly take the rain as opposed to this. Although snow would be better.

So if four people die in cold weather and four people die in heat, does that mean on the average nobody died?

I'm sure that why you tried a cold shower.

But really, if you want to cool down more, take a bath -- there is not enough thermal mass in a shower stream to cool down your body. Also, if you are hot from working out, take a hot shower, and the latent heat of vaporization will cool down your body much more than a cool shower. (so I've been told, and it seems to work for me).
The dogma lives loudly within me.

It means eight people died from the weather which is unremarkable.

Look, man, why don't you come over sometime and take a gander at our "pool". Which color do you want to swim in, brown or green? We have both as the algae seem to only prefer the deep end. As for taking a bath, I do take them. Every morning. Or "shaths", as I call them. The sh***y drain allows for both a steady stream of lukewarm water and a nice pool around your ankles. So yeah, a cold shower would be nice as it would be the closest thing I could come to swimming around here (aside from swimming in my own sweat, of course.)

:P

I've heard that about showers too, but I dunno if I buy it. Either way the temperature of the water won't change your internal body temp. all too much, and the hot water prob'ly does better cleaning out your pores after working out. But as far as cooling off goes (or at least feeling so), I don't think it can top cold water.

Ahh yes, that reminds me! I've seen these machines where you put a can of beer into a "tank" of icewater, and the machine spins the can around very high speeds. There's a very slight wobble to the can, however, which helps push the icewater around. Apparently it can chill down a hot can of beer in 30 seconds or less.

Never got one, but I think it'd be a very fun (and practical!) science project!

Debs, I could go for one of them, as well! Mayhaps a Wal-Mart trip is in my future...

My shed is in fact really a garage as I live in suburbia but for the purposes of this story a shed it will be. Luckily I don't own a car. If I ever do get a car it will be something to tinker with and be small, old and British. Just like my mum.

if I didn't know better, I would think you wrote that, D'oh!
