Elton John is sick of American rock "style"; ...sorry LE!

This guy is so full of it. He wears pink polka-dot suits and huge odd glasses, yet he thinks he has the right to talk about fashion as if glam-rock style is better than punk-rock style.

Dude, it's clothing. It has nothing to do with music, and one band's "style" is no better or worse than another bands "style"...or at least not enough to warrant a judgement call by Elton John.

Attention, rock 'n' rollers. Elton John is sick of your tattoos and piercings. John, who will perform at the third Fashion Rocks concert Sept. 7 at Radio City Music Hall, says he'd like American bands to adopt the cutting-edge, glam-rock style made popular by his peers.

"It's been a thing the British have always been very good at, with Bowie, myself, T.Rex, the Who, Queen. ... We all embraced that side of it," John, 59, tells Fashion Rocks magazine, on newsstands Aug. 8.

"And I think it's good that some American bands are beginning to do that, but it's still very rare for bands to make a real effort. So when you get groups like The Killers and Scissor Sisters who come along, it's thrilling. I'm so over the tattoos and the T-shirts and rings through the noses. It's not pretty, it's not pleasant, it's not exciting. Please stop it now."

John says his theatrical style, made famous in his '70s heyday, was meant "to give people a bit of fun" while he sat at the piano for long sets.

When he was starting out, his musical "heroes" _ among them George Harrison, Leon Russell, Neil Diamond and Brian Wilson _ supported his budding career. Today, John likes to mentor up-and-coming artists.

"When I hear something new that's really, really great, I ring people up and say, `I think that's a fantastic album,'" he says.

CBS will air a two-hour special on the Fashion Rocks concert Sept. 8 (9 p.m. EDT). Proceeds from the concert, which kicks off New York Fashion Week, will benefit John's AIDS foundation.

"I've been very lucky in my life," he says. "I was a drug addict for 16 years, at a time when AIDS was just getting started, and I put myself at so much risk. I came out of it negative rather than positive, and I wanted to do something to give back."

Well, (adjusting old-fart hat) I agree with some of that. I don't know about the 'glam rock' stuff, but i sure think the nose piercing, ripped clothes stuff has done it's time. :P

I agree certain fashions look better than other styles, and that some fads have been long gone.....

But something bothered me about a man who wears pink polka-dot suits trying to make judgement calls about the styles of other bands. If anyone needs the tolerance, it's Elton John and his wacky style....not the other way around! :P

He appears to be handily forgetting that much of the punk style came from Britain, too, as a deliberate reaction against the hideous fashions of the 70's which he must bear some of the responsibility for.

To an extent I have to agree with Sir Elton on this. I have always thought that Brian Ferry of Roxy Music fame to have been one of the classiest acts in business.

I like some of Roxy's old stuff like this: The Strand or this insane piece from 1972 Remake/Remodel.

I think I'm with 89th on this ( :o )

The punk stuff has run its course, but maybe the glam stuff has as well.

And...yeah...someone with his "style" has NO RIGHT to criticize the "style" of other musicians...well...maybe for some stars that should be "musicians".
And how are you today?

Bah. I like the punk rock stuff. Quite a bit, actually. He's certainly entitled to his opinion (though it would be wrong ;) )

My personal opinion on music: If I like it, it's good. I don't particularly care what anyone else has to say about it - I'm listening to it for me, not for someone else.

This is a good example of why I avoid music videos at all costs.

Attractive female rock stars should dress like Christina Aguilera. Aside from that, I have no opinions on the subject.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

I don't know...if I like an artist and he has a new song out (like Ben Folds), I'll enjoy watching his music video.

For example...here's his relatively new video for "Landed", I think it's funny! :P

I'm not saying music videos are bad or anything- they're just not for me. All I care about it the musical aspect. Actually, I don't even really pay attention to lyrics all that much, which many people find weird. I guess I pay attention to the sound and structure and rhythm of the words, but not the message.

Maybe I'm missing a big part of the song, but it's just the musical aspect that interests me.

Props to the artists who manage to make great videos, but too many of them get caught up in the "image." Guess I'm just not a fan of fashion and such.

I rarely listen to words either.

Weird.

I've even sung songs for people (with guitar) that I have sung for a thousand years.
They start talking about what the song means.
I just kind of smile and nod.

Strange, me.

Yup, I can sing along just fine (Ok, I guess that's debatable ^_^).But if somebody were to quote a lyric from one of my favorite bands, I probably wouldn't even recognize it, and I couldn't tell you what the major themes from any of my favorite songs are.

The music is slightly more important to me than the lyrics, but not much...maybe a 60:40 ratio.
