Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.

Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.

Both were shot in the head.

Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.

Both were succeeded by Southerners.

Both successors were named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.

Both names are comprised of fifteen letters

Booth ran from the theater and was caught in a warehouse.
Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

Note: It is rumored that
A week before Lincoln was shot, he was with friends in Monroe, Maryland.
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with his friend Marilyn Monroe.
However Marilyn Monroe died a year before Kennedy was assassinated.

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was with friends in Monroe, Maryland.

However Marilyn Monroe died a year before Kennedy was assassinated.

I think the normal tag is:

A week before Lincoln was shot he was in Monroe, Maryland.
A week before Kennedy was shot he was in, well...I'm sure you get the picture.

I read these facts years ago and am still quite stunned at the similarities in the two cases whenever I read them.

I like this bit:

Quote:

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
This is one of the statements that is so misleadingly worded (or downright inaccurate) that it doesn't really merit inclusion even on a list of mere superficial similarities.

First of all, saying that Lincoln and Kennedy were both "particularly concerned with civil rights" is like saying that Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt were both "particularly concerned with war," or that Herbert Hoover and Ronald Reagan were both "particularly concerned with economics." Neither Lincoln nor Kennedy evinced a "particular interest" in civil rights, and to all appearances, both would willingly have maintained the racial status quo had events beyond their control not forced their hands.

Although Lincoln was personally opposed to slavery, his primary concern with the issue was how its divisiveness affected the United States, not the liberation of the Black man. Had the Union been able to survive half slave and half free without erupting into war, Lincoln's stated position was that he would have allowed the institution of slavery to remain intact and die a slow death. And whatever Lincoln's personal feelings about the equality of Blacks, he didn't espouse support for their "civil rights" because he believed that white society would never accept them as equals. Lincoln's only real expression of "civil rights" was his support for the idea of relocating free Blacks to Liberia so they could live apart from whites in a separate society. Even Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued as an exigency of war, not as measure intended to permanently end slavery in the USA, and constitutional amendments ending slavery and guaranteeing citizens of all races the right to vote were not enacted until after Lincoln's death.

In Kennedy's case, it was only after racial crises such as the University of Mississippi's refusal to admit a Black student (James Meredith) to attend class and the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, that he belatedly moved to promote civil rights legislation. Even then, his lack of support in Congress (and, ultimately, his assassination) meant that the task of passing civil rights legislation (such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965) fell to his successor, Lyndon Johnson.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Hmmm. I guess someone noticed a similiarity or two, and decided to reach for and stretch a few facts to have a more impressive list.

Joan D'Arc and John D'Oh:

1. Both have French names which sound slightly silly, and with apostrophes in them

2. Joan was very fond of King Charles, and would walk with him of an evening. John once had a King Charles Spaniel, and would trudge around until he performed his ablutions.

3. Joan was captured by Duke John the Fearless of Burgundy. John would often capture large quantities of Burgundy, after which he became quite fearless.

4. When she was 12, Joan began to have visions of Saints Catherine and Margaret. When John was 12, he began to catch sight of two visions who lived next door, their names of course were Catherine and Agnes. Agnes had a pet rock which at John's urging she named Margaret.

5. There were many calls for Joan to be stoned to death after she reported her visions of Margaret. On catching site of John watching her sunbathing, Agnes threw her pet stone, Margaret, at John, causing him to have visions all of his own.

6. Both Jean and John were accused of cross-dressing.

7. Joan called herself 'The Virgin'. John didn't like to do that, but sometimes people would hold him down and force him to admit it.

8. Joan was sadly burned at the stake. John once went to a barbeque, at which he sadly burned the steak.

I could go on, but let's face it, if you've read this far you're a bigger fool than I am.

One tidbit of Lincoln history that I always found interesting was that Edwin Booth (John Wilkes Booth's) older brother saved I think it was Lincoln's son Tad from an on coming train. The Lincoln's were so grateful to Edwin that they wanted to repay him in some way. They did eventually years later when Edwin wanted to claim John's body for burial. Typically the body would have been buried in a pauper's grave but no, it buried in the Booth family plot in Greenmount Cementary in Baltimore.

Now that I've posted that, I think I'll look it up on Snopes.

Robert Todd Lincoln is also interesting in that he has a connection to three presidential shootings. He was invited to attend the theatre with his father the night he was killed. He was in attendance at when President Garfield was shot in a train station (there at Garfield's invitation). He was also invited to the Pan-American Exposition where McKinley was shot at McKinley's invitation. RT Lincoln, after McKinley's death, let it be known that he would not accept any further presidential invitations to any event.

Oh - yes, justme - that story is, as far as I've read, true. I believe it happened in New Jersey, and the story was told to others by Robert Todd Lincoln himself.

Heh... I liked Vowell's nickname for him: Jinxy McDeath
It was a confusion of ideas between him and one of the lions he was hunting in Kenya that had caused A. B. Spottsworth to make the obituary column. He thought the lion was dead, and the lion thought it wasn't.

You could make the list with a whole lot of other influencial figures. It's easy. It's very easy to find commonalities when you can use anything at all, and you don't have to also discuss the differences.

I think MP was referring to my list. I often cause the girls' eyes to pop and their jaws to drop. The next phase is normally projectile vomiting, but she might get lucky if she only had a light supper.

I have always been fascinated by the coincidences common to Jesus and Norm the Carpenter from PBS' "This Old House".

For instance, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and Norm has been to Bethlehem, PA!
