HOLY CARP!!!

Well that seems perfectly reasonable. Rather than giving owners the opportunity to get rabies shot, and removing the dogs if they don't comply, you bludgeon them to death in front of the owners. Yep. Perfectly reasonable. |

I'm not sure this has a much to do with communism as it has to do with the bizarre extremist approach that the Chinese government has historically used to deal with minor issues (like when they had school children plucking grass out of the ground because any greenery other than agricultural pursuits were considered to be wasteful). Nothing about a communist economic model would encourage this ridiculous behaviour. |

This is a common feeling amongst the Chinese people. A lawn to them is silly. You work your butt off to grow it and keep it trimmed and you can't even eat it or sell it. It is quite common to see houses with rice planted right up to the walls. that being said, they do have grass in their parks and gardens, many of which are quite stunning in their beauty. |

But wasn't there was a time (under Mao) that this idea was taken to the absolute extreme? Public parks and gardens were grass-free as well. So were school yards. ANY grass was removed. The initial idea was that having a flower garden or huge grassy park when people were starving to death was bourgeois, so they changed the parks into vegetable gardens. But then it bacame a fanatical thing, and even the smallest patches of grass (much too small to plant anything edible) were plucked free of grass. |

It seems everything Mao did was an excercise in the extreme. Food shortages? Turn everyone (and I mean everyone) out into the fields. Poor manufacturing sector? Turn everyone (and I mean everyone) into the factories. That was the Great Leap Forward and brought about one of the greatest famines the Chinese have ever known. Today you can hear the refer to it as the Great Leap Backward. So, yes, having people expunge the face of the earth of every blade of grass is right in character with Mao. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but communism is a classless, stateless governmental system in which private ownership either by individuals or the government is not acknowledged. I don't know if China still recognizes themselves as communist, but I really don't see how you could label it as such, given the definition above. |

What you state is an ideal and by its strict application there never has been a truly communist government. |

Hey JBryan, from your travels in China are packs of semi feral dogs running about cities and villages common? It was downright dangerous in Western Siberia when I was there- packs running wild. Gunshots at dawn usually meant the police were on a cull. |

Well, I thank you. I see your point, but I just get tired of abortion and gay rights being brought into EVERYTHING. It would be nice to see a thread where one of those isn't mentioned. I really don't feel like getting into an abortion debate, so I will leave it at that. What was done to those dogs was not right, but so are many other things done in the world. |

LW, I feel for the dogs also. I love dogs and have had 1+ dogs all my life. There is a responsibility that goes with pet ownership though. No pet should be allowed to endanger the life or property of another person. There is no doubt that this could have been handled different but the article does state that only about three % of dogs in China are vaccinated for rabies. Couple this with the enormous number of people that die there from rabies, something had to be done. When you are up to your a** in alligators, the mosquitos swarming around your head are not a priority. lb |
