Moonbat, I suck at analogies. I know that. :P

Secondly, I think I should put in the caveat that others have here...that I have "forgiven" him, pending he does what he says - working with the Jewish community, etc.

I’m not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

Gotta wonder how much they're going to hit him up for.

So Jews go after money?

The one right above mine.

Hopefully you're not going to mis-interpret IT's statement like others already did before in the other long Mel Gibson thread...

I am sure that everyone in Hollywood is in it for the "art" -- the money is just a nice accessory.

Everyone goes after money.

Many years back, while Jack Hannah was still the day to day director of the Columbus Zoo, we scored a major coup in landing a traveling panda exhibit that was scheduled for only a handful of cities by special arrangement with the Chinese government. The World Wildlife Federation threw an absolute fit over this, staging protests, getting media coverage, and generally raising holy hell, claiming that this was a terrible thing, exploiting an endangered species for money, and causing terrible disruption to their biological rhythms and possibly keeping them from possibly mating, etc. etc. etc.

Hannah scheduled a meeting with the WWF, and offered them a pretty significant percentage of the gate from the exhibit.

Miraculously, :rolleyes2: the WWF did a complete 180. Now, they said, they'd had time to reflect on the situation, they came to believe that the exhibit would be a wonderful way to teach the public about the fragile ecosystem and the plight of this beautiful endangered species, and they encouraged everyone who could visit the Zoo to do so.

You know how those panda-lovers are. Money-grubbing hypocrites.

In other words, the concept of shaking down someone you've got leverage over isn't a "Jewish thing." In fact, you could make a pretty good argument that it's become the American Way.

I also welcome his apology and wish him well for his recovery from both alcoholism and bigotry, which probably have similar causes. He must have been suicidal to get in a car with a blood-alcohol level as high as his and in significant emotional pain, despite his wealth and success. "Sincerity" is a subjective phrase, and meaningless in this context. I hope he finds peace and really does use his fame to combat bigotry and not promote it in the future, as he claims he will.

While I agree with you Jeffrey in hoping he will use his celebrity status to combat bigotry and anti-semiticism, I put his promises in the same catgory as OJ Simpson promising to track down the real killer.

Well, I hope there won't be a cash settlement as part of discerning "the appropriate path for healing." Don't you agree?

IT - I hope Gibson uses both his fame and fortune to combat bigotry against both gays and Jews. It will be good for his soul and hopefully contribute to finding the peace and sense of self-worth that has so far eluded him, despite his wealth and success. I wish him well on his journey. His "insanity" comment still shows elements of denial of responsibility, but I hope rehab will help him with this.

I can kinda understand what Mel is feeling. I have said many nasty comments while under the influence. I'm sure some of it was a cry for attention or help. When confronted with our own prejudices, it makes us re-examine ourselves to see where it came from and how to correct such issues. When he does his fourth step, he will probably put this high on the list of his character defects. This whole situation with Gibson reminded me of the bigoted things I said when drunk. Alcohol lowers one's inhibitions so deep-seeded feelings come to the surface. I don't think anyone is without some prejudice, intentional or not. I mean, look at Mel's dad. He denies the Holocaust happened. Mel grew up listening to anti-Semitic and racists dreck from his old man. I remember hearing racist jokes and comments while growing up. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to break its influence on you. I wish him well. I give him the benefit of the doubt. Now, he has to put his actions where his mouth is.

I guess I missed the part of the poice report that mentioned the bloody corpses found in Gibson's trunk.

Also, Mel Gibson has owned up to his failings. I don't remember OJ ever saying 'I'm going to try and examine the causes of what made me a homicidal wife-beating scumbag...'

No, Mel Gibson's publicist owned up to Mel's failings.

If Mel is truly in rehab, the first week is always detox and the addict is held incommuncado from everyone, which means he could not have made the comments to his publicist nor seen the press release that was put out. If he is not in detox, he is not in a proper rehab program.

I suspect the publicist got the message of just how damaging this whole thing is the moment Disney refused to confirm that Mel's new film, eagerly awaited and due out in November, would in fact be released. Suddenly the business end of Mel Gibson Enterprises saw lots of $ signs swirling down the toilet, as if in a scene from some surreal Fantasia.

Thus, the publicist owned up to Mel's failings to hopefully salvage something from this debacle.

I don't for a moment believe that Mel Gibson is any sort of permanently changed man. Hollywood is built on illusion. Gibson's entire life is Hollywood. It's just a matter of creating the proper illusion and the public will buy it.

I am always amazed at what awesome sleuthing abilities you have, Rick, and how you can so accurately diagnose Mel's affliction and necessary course of treatment from a press release. You have a godlike intellect.

I have a brother with severe addictions and have been going through this for 30 years. I know very well how these programs work. The giveaway was when the press release said he was in rehab, not in treatment.

Handling addictions through rehabilitation is always basically the same procedures and when they finally get into rehab because of something as severe as an arrest compounded with his interaction with the police, he would be put into detox for at least a week if not longer and detox mandates no contact with the outside world at all.

You know for a person who considers the terse delivery of fact regarding the economic integration of the world's two largest bilateral trading partners as lashing out in another thread, your statement to Rick on this most trivial of matters, Mr. Gibson's addiction & illness, stings as a cat o' nine tails across a naked back in comparison to a short sharp swat with a grandmother's hand across a toddler's diapered buttocks.
