East Coast Heat Wave From Hell; how are you staying cool?

Geez, it's 11 in the morning and already 94 outside. The forecast high for Richmond is 102, with a heat index approaching 110. Thank goodness for AC! I don't know how our ancestors survived this kind of heat.

I'm planning to stay inside alternating between this keyboard and the piano keyboard for the next few days. I've already been drinking so much water to stay hydrated that I feel like a huge water balloon about to burst!

Anyone working outside: please take it easy!

Yeah - same deal here. At midnight last night, the humidex was 110F. Right now, the humidex is about 112F.

Me too, dol. But I've been getting massive cabin fever, and even going to the pool isn't very refreshing.

I've found, the absolute BEST place to go when you need to get out of your home (besides a movie theater, which costs money). . . the supermarket. That's one store where skimping on the A/C is just not an option

Meteorology is quite the funky quasi-science. I looked up "humidex", and apparently it's like our "heat index", only tends to give higher numbers, all other things being equal. (The name is cooler-sounding, too.) (Pun intended.)

I also wondered how they calculate these numbers. It's no simple lookup table!

I believe "Humidex" is a Canadian invention. Windchill may be as well, but I'm not sure.

Last time the temp. was this high we lost our power for a couple days - lots of people in my neighborhood had no power for about 9 days.
We're keeping our fingers crossed.

One thing you should all be doing is drinking plenty of water. In the desert we are used to always drinking (sometimes even mixing a bit in our scotch). Keep hydrated, esp if the A/C goes out!

Are you reffering to the blackout in 2004? We had it here as well. I've been thinking I should grab some cash out of an ATM and fill my car with gas, just in case. Get water, too. Perhaps I'll do that this afternoon.

Improv made me bump up the setting from my normal comfort area of 74 to 78. Four degrees makes a noticable difference, but after reading about Phlebas and Dol's ordeal, I have nothing to complain about.

I have my air conditioner set to 78. It hasn't shut off in 3 days. Currently, it's 80 in here.

No. I'm referring to the power outages of July 2006 - started 2 wks ago.

I've gone back to traditional cloudy skies and odd showers - the usual weather in northern England.

And you know, i am actually VERY grateful for a break from the sun and heat.

Because I'm a nerd, it's slow today, and it's sort of my thing, I fooled around and had Matlab calculate the daily max Heat Indexes (and Humidexes) for the rest of the week in the New England area. No, I'm not THAT bored; it was really easy and it took me about 15 minutes. :P Anyways, here goes:

Today:
Heat Index: 101ºF Humidex: 114ºF

Wednesday:
Heat Index: 103ºF Humidex: 115ºF

Thursday:
Heat Index: 101ºF Humidex: 114ºF

Friday:
Heat Index: 91ºF Humidex: 114ºF
I cite irreconcilable differences.

One advantage of living in a dry climate is that we can keep our thermostat at 80-82F and stay cool. Gee, is it more environmentally friendly to live in the desert?

Minus the whole dam/irrigation thing, overpopulation and the such, sure!

Why is damming and irrigation bad? The first peoples did it here -- aren't they above reproach?

Also, you should know that agriculture uses 4x the water per acre than residential, so the more AZ land is converted from ag to rez, the better it is for the water system.

Now for over-population -- New Jersey is significantly more densely populated than even India, let alone AZ.

Any other misunderstanding you'd like me to rectify?

Because I'm a nerd.....

Thursday:
Heat Index: 101ºF Humidex: 114ºF

Friday:
Heat Index: 91ºF Humidex: 114ºF

Ok nerd.

 Explain how the Humidex can be the same for these two days, but the Heat Index is different by 10 degrees.

Glad you asked!

The heat index is based on the air temperature and the relative humidity.

The humidex is based on the air temperature and the dewpoint.

Different parameters.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
