Bob Novak Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. The former mayor of New York was on top of last month's national Gallup poll measuring presidential preferences by registered Republicans, with 29 percent. Sen. John McCain's 24 percent was second, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich third at 8 percent. National polls all year have shown Giuliani running either first or second to McCain, with the rest of the presidential possibilities far behind. Republican insiders respond to these numbers by saying rank-and-file GOP voters will abandon Giuliani once they realize his position on abortion, gay rights and gun control. Party strategists calculate that if he actually runs, he must change on at least one of these issues. =-=-==-=-=-= "if he actually runs, he must change on at least one of these issues" heh... |

Is Rudy electable in the South? If Rudy can overcome that hurdle, he's the GOP nominee. And if Hilary is running, he may not even have to change his positions....too many broken glass voters against the Big H. |

Pretty close. It's not necessarily party, but candidate. A broken glass voter is one who hates the candidate so much he would drag himself across broken glass to vote against the candidate. Or, at least as I understand it. Any election with Hilary will generate turn-out, with a definte percentage coming out only to vote against her. |

I believe he could win Florida for two reasons. The moderate/conservatives throughout the state will go for him. And so will the moderate/liberals in Miami. |

I like Rudy; I think he should run. As for Newt, he's absolutely unelectable, of course. I like him, and I actually think that he'd make a pretty good President. One thing has always bugged me about him, though. When you listen to him talk, he has a habit of starting a lot of his sentences with the phrase "Well frankly, ..." If you never noticed it before, now you will. That always grated on me not only because it was an annoying verbal habit, but also by its implication: what, you're lying to me all the rest of the time? Most people already believe that anyway; you shouldn't say things that make them think it even more. While on the subject of annoying verbal habits, Hilary has one, too. Listen to her public speeches. At some point, she'll try to make a connection with whatever her audience is, trying to sound like "regular people," and she'll plow into something with the opener, "You know, ..." and as soon as you hear that intro, you can be assured that the next thing she says is going to be utter nonsense, or a fabricated "true story." |

Rudy Giuliani was easily the best mayor New York has had in a generation. I think he would make a good president. I don't think he'll win against Hillary, but you never know. He has some health issues though, don't we all, and as for his being too liberal for the GOP one wonders with the current occupant spending like a drunken sailor whether that even matters. But Rudy nor McCain are "insiders" and neither are likely to make any deals that would help them get elected. As for Gingrich, my late wife and I went to see him give a speech in Marietta, GA a long time ago, before he was Speaker of the House. We had about the same impression; he seemed more like an FBI desk jockey to us and somehow disingenuous, a guy with something to hide. "I don't trust him," she said when we left. He is originally from Pennsylvania but represented one of the most arch conservative districts in Georgia, where a town ordinance demands that every head of household own a gun - Acworth or some other place near there. Anyway Newt is not, McCain and Rudy are too far left unless Hillary is the nominee, and she will be, so who knows? I might be a "broken glass voter" but I like voting "for" someone and of all the possibilities, at this point in time, I'd feel best voting for Rudy. |

I'm very excited for the upcoming presidential election. Regardless of what's happening in politics now or even then... The combination of having: 1) Bush leaving and 2) A very deep bench of GREAT republican candidates ...means that as long as the GOP doesn't screw up majorly like nominating Jeb Bush...it's a guaranteed win for the republicans. GUARANTEED. Any combination of Rudy, McCain, Condi, Allen, Newt, etc...man, what a powerhouse. |

Am I the only one who's thinking 'Oh God, not again'? These elections go on for so long, and even if you try and avoid them, there's just this interminable round of self-serving dick-splashes on the TV the whole time, and then we'll have to listen to Teddy Kennedy pontificating about something or other, and then some bonehead will say what a shame it is than Arnie can't run, and it just goes on for ever, and then some prat with nice hair will win, and I'll think it's all over, and then realise that was just the DNC or GOP finally selecting their candidate, and it all starts up again, and then they start kissing some poor unsuspecting baby, and we find the GOP candidate has a swastika collection, and the DNC guy ran away during a battle, and we have to go through those awful speeches and it's just awful. |

I agree, but he has to get the nomination first. And getting the nomination is where he'd have to change positions. |
