This time to Oxford and Cambridge for three days to check out the universities. I'm staying the in Post-Grad halls and have private guided tours and lectures and talks with admissions staff so it should be retty cool (my school has lots of connections with Oxbridge so they put on the private stuff for us which is fab).

Back on friday night.

Se ya!

If you like the arts and rowing, go to Oxford. If you like science, go to Cambridge, preferably Trinity.

Simple, huh? :)

(And no, I don't have a bloody clue what I'm talking about, except you might get to meet Stephen Hawking if you go to Trinity)
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

As I said, go to Oxford! My friend (as I mentioned before) is going into her 3rd year for physics there and loves it. The rowing thing is true, as she is also the captain of her college's women's crew team. So, if you end up in Mansfield College, join the rowing team! ^_^
And how are you today?

If Oxbrigde does not live up to your expectation, know Bunker Hill Community College is only a 6 hour plane ride away, right here in Boston. :)

I am officially in love.

Not just a little bit of a crush. I mean, head over heels, hopelessly, utterly and completely in love.

If i don't get into Oxford, i will kill myself.

(Oh, i'm back by the way :P )

When do you have to apply by in order to be able to start this fall? Or would this be for the spring, or for next year? In the US, most college decisions are made by the Spring.

The closing date for applications is October, then i have two interviews in mid december and two exams ( :o :( :o I just found out that i will be having my two interviews and both my physics and maths entrance exams actually on my 18th birthday because the physics date is the 10th of december. How uber-crap is that!!!! ). I find out whether i am accepted or not on the 22nd of december. So it will either be a really sh*t Christmas or the best ever! :P I wont actually begin then until next september.

I'm applying to Balliol to read physics if anyone is wondering...

I plan on sitting in on some physics lectures (assuming i get the time) so who knows, i might see you.

OMG!

I totally forgot to say!!!

Guess who i met!?!

LORD BUTLER!!! Yes, as in 'The Butler Report' guy! He is the Master at University College and i actually met and spoke to him! He's such a lovely man. It was so weird to meet him in the flesh after having seen his name and picture splashed ALL over the media.

(Moonbat! How cool! Are you actually at Oxford now? How old are you? If you do go to some, and assuming i get in, we should go out for coffee and have some physics catch-ups! It's always wonderful to talk to someone who has a genuine interest in what you are studying! )

I'm at Imperial at the moment but next year i will be at Oxford (St Johns). I'm 25, and yea that would be great. Discussing physics over coffee, what could be better? :).

Oh and qudos on meeting Butler!

I'm applying to Imperial as well.

(As well as UCL, Kings and Queen Mary's)

What branch of physics are you in? Are you doing a PhD? What will you be doing at St John's? Sorry for all the questions i'm just really interested. :P

(Oh, and for some reason, i thought you were MUCH older than that! I had you pinned at about 50. :leaving: )

Cool place, Caroline. I've been cruising through the site, and boy do I ever wish I was your age, and über smart like you, and lived in the UK like you. Good luck, I sincerely hope you get in.

So when one applies to Oxford, it's not to Oxford itself, but to individual colleges within the university? Are all the colleges for different areas of study, or?

Tell us more stuff.

I will say all I am certain of: I know that each college is not specifically for only one area of study. Balliol is not the only college that one may study physics at, for example. One of my friends is studying physics at Mansfield college, also of Oxford.

That is all I know, so I will leave.
And how are you today?

Thanks for being interested! ^_^

You don't apply to 'Oxford' as a university as such, instead you apply to one of the specific colleges. Not every college reads every subject. For instance, i want to study physics and there are two colleges at Oxford that don't offer physics as one of their subjects. Some of the colleges are only for mature students and some are only for girls.

The collegiate system is only used in three uni's in England; Oxford, Cambridge and Durham. Basically, you live actually inside the college in halls of residence for the duration of your course and have 'supervisions' or 'tutorials' (one on one sessions with a lecturer which last for about one hour and you have one per week per subject) actually on site at your college. You also eat most of your meals in college (the grand hall is like something out of Harry Potter! When there are formal meals on, the whole place is candle lit and you have to wear black tie. Unbelievable.) Your actual lectures are on the department sites however. So all of my lectures will actually be on the science department campus. All of the colleges have their own library and JCR (Junior Common Room - social commitee that deals with all the social aspects of uni :P ) and are like minature universities in their own right.

If i apply to Balliol and they are over subscribed, what can happen is you can be 'pooled'. This means, Balliol would put me in an academic 'pool' which means you are on offer to any other college that may want to take you. So if for example you are good enough to be accepted into Oxford but your particular college that you have applied to has too many succesful aplicants, they will offer you to other colleges who have not been fully subscribed. So even though i have been applied to Balliol, i may eventually end up in a different college all together. :)

If you have any other questions, feel free to fire them at me.

You thought i was 50!? Jesus how dull must I sound. Don't answer that, it was rhetorical.

At the moment i'm working on magnetism in transition metal silicide systems which is part of the Nanomaterials MRes i'm taking at Imperial. I use various numerical methods to solve the schrodinger equation and then try and work out what the solutions are telling me.

But i haven't been inspired yet so at St. John's i'll be doing this:

http://www.lsi.ox.ac.uk/2.php
http://www.lsi.ox.ac.uk/6.php

I'm tempted by some aspect of mathematical/ computational biology (this stuff looks awesome: http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/~maini/public/researchsec.htm ), which could then lead on to research in theoretical biology or indeed back to some form of physics (e.g. condensed matter theory) but i'm also tempted by medical image analysis or the analysis of protein netoworks through bioinformatics which would provide a route through to neuromorphic engineering which looks pretty damn cool too.

So i'm not quite sure what i'll be doing at St Johns except that it will be at the life-science physical sciences interface.

Not dull, just very, very intelligent for a 25 year old!

That all sounds fantastic!

:( I was just reading through the website and found that they are changing the entrance programme for 2006 (which none of my teachers have cared to yet tell me <_< ) . I now have to sit a maths and physics exam on the 1st of November, as opposed to just a two hour maths exam on the day of my interview.

This means i wont even get an interview if i don't pass both exams with a high enough mark.

Ouch sounds tough, fingers crossed though. The other universities you mentioned are also good but Oxford does have a certain charm so i do hope it all goes well for you.
