Running a charity event

HOLY CARP!!!
I am considering organizing a walk/run for a charity next year. I have experience in fundraising as well as organizing big events, though never something like this (it's always been for non-profit theatre organizations). Two good friends of mine are very experienced with planning runs in the town I would do it in (they are the founders of a triathalon that takes place there, and it's become a huge thing). So I can draw on their experience as far as permits, routes, and what I need to do from a logistical point of view.

The provincial association for my cause would very likely be easy to get on board, because they seem to be rather desperate for fundraising. There is a local chapter, but it doesn't seem to be particularly active.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing? I'm in the very early brainstorming stages (my plan would be to do the event next summer, so while I still have time, I need to get the ball rolling if I want the event to be well publicized). I'm looking for any ideas, pitfalls, or general thoughts on how this has worked for anyone who has done anything like this in the past.

I'm not sure about setting up your own, but i run the Breast Cancer Run For Life (couldn't do it this year because of exams :( ) and there are a couple of other organised runs every year which i'm looking into.

It might be less hassle and more productive for your fund raising ideas if you look into what routes are already set by other fundraising runs...

Just an idea...

Woohoo! I just chatted with my friend who organizes triathalons and runs all the time. She just got home from their two day triathalon event. She's more than willing to give me a hand and has already given me some great pointers.

So far, we've narrowed it down to doing spring (probably late May), probably at Point Pelee (a national park). We'll have both a 5km and 10km course. And it'll be Walk Run Roll (rollerblading). We've decided on a fun run rather than a race. $50 entrance fee, but entrance fee is waived if you get $100 in sponsers.

She estimates that we'll get 80-100 people our first year.

We're also considering doing a school challenge, offering a prize to the school (or athletic department of a highschool) who brings in the most money.

We're going to sit down and have a brainstorming session early next week. :D

Oh, MP - very good suggestion. My friend organizes a half-marathon at the Park we're thinking of, so we'll likely use part of her course. :)
