If one examines the numbers, about 20% of American would identify themselves as liberals, while somewhere between 30-35% identify themselves as conservatives.

Yes, but I'm a Conservative and I have exactly no time for Coulter.

I think you'll find a lot of folks out there like me.

I would not peg you a a conservative.

Perhaps in fiscal matters, but not otherwise.

But in fairness I wouldn't peg Bush as a fiscal conservative.

Being a fiscal conservative is a lot more difficult than being a social conservative. Any fool can tell other people how to live.

I wouldn't peg Bush as any type of conservative. I personally think he is a radical.

Any fool can tell other people how to live.

That behavior is, by no means, confined to Conservatives. Nor is it something that all Conservatives do. However, to some extent everyone wants to tell others how to live. I have no problem telling someone not to steal my car, for instance.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

I'm probably being presumptious JB, but I don't really see you as a social conservative.

Not very nuch but whether it is telling someone they can't burn a flag or telling someone they can't smoke or eat certain foods, authoritarians exist on both ends of the political spectrum.

Yes, you're right. Telling other people what to do is a human rather than a political trait. My wife is pretty apolitical, as it happens.

Buckley is both socially and fiscally conservative. As well he accepts the inevitablity of change but approaches it cautiously. His weapon is persuasive logic

GWB is too impatient and reactive to be a conservative. Populism rather than persuasive logic is his chief political tool. He is fiscally profligate. He adheres far too much to the myth of American exclusivity to be anything other than a radical.

My wife is not apolitical. She sees Democrats on TV and sys, "Communist". I suppose she would know but she has yet to have sufficient exposure to American politics to transcend the 'black hat" "white hat" simplistic distinction and often goggles at me in wonder when I call a Republican an idiot. A bit OT and rambling but more to the point is her politics doesn't stop her from telling me what to do.
