Oh Yeah, also I think Steve's right about needing to find another place to live, like the Moon or Mars.

Humans are so stoopid we are going to destroy our planet.

From the article:

Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

The fact that you single out George Bush says you have an axe to grind. When you start addressing the head of China, or the EU governments or, the guy running Iran, maybe people will listen.

And remember - it doesn't matter whether you drive a car capable of 50mpg or 15mpg - you are still a polluter like everyone else.

So here's a question for you - the article got me thinking.

1. Do you support the US government starting a program to build starships so we can keep the human race going should one of these catastrophic events happen.

2. Does this sound like imperialism, or are we assuming that there is zero possibility of any other kind of life out there and the universe is ours.

3. Is this any different to sending US troops to other countries to root out people who could threaten the survival of the US.

The humans with the most money and biggest guns have always prevailed.
The victors write the History books.
Might makes right.

We should just tell the truth about our selfishness, and stop pretending to be the morally superior group.

Wishy-washy answer - not interested in who writes history books. Do you believe Steven Hawkings suggestion that we should go forth any multiply elsewhere?

Why don't we just take the kajillion dollars that full-scale colonialization would require and use it to improve research on sustainable technologies?

I have no desire to go colonize in outer space. I don't think I'm alone in that thought.

Gee, I'm so sorry I wrote a wishy washy answer.
I'll really try to earn more compliments from you as we all compete for respect here.

Sure, let's go multiply elsewhere.
It's inevitable.
But that new colony is doomed too.

Most humans suck.
We are mostly stoopid and selfish.

But sure, we can suck on the moon too.

That would be nice until a big ol' asteroid hits the earth and we are all screwed anyway.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

1) Our planetary tie is a weakness, one asteroid and bye bye baby.

2) Sooner or later you'd think we're going to run out of space on Earth.

3) How can one not marvel at the idea of our species reaching out for the stars?

Kenny - you having a bad day or something - don't sound your usual optimistic self?

I am ok with building starships - little concerned about the cost. I think it is imperialistic and is no different than the British or French colonising Africa. Just a different scale.

A little different to sending troops to the middle east (unless I'm mistaken we don't plan to stay there) but the goal is the same - the preservation of human life.

No.
Just realistic.

I think I am being accurate.
We are discussing ensuring the survival of the human race by colonizing another planet.

What makes us think we are not bringing the fatal flaw with us on our way to Mars?

I guess we just have to select the "good" people.
Right?

When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.

Well, contrary to Kenny's opinion I think nature is much more dangerous to man than man is to man. A good flu epidemic will clear the ranks. Historically it was plagues that did more damage to the human race than war.

Contrary?
Huh?

Sure nature could get us too.
And viruses may stowaway too.
Asteroids can strike Mars too.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't go.

THe bottom line is that the earth is just a rock. It's a resource. We can do whatever we want with it. The solar system and beyond are more of the same. Planets don't have souls, so it doesn't really matter whether we put Coca Cola factories on them or not - the only people who really care are humans.

If there was a God, maybe he'd have done something about us, or maybe we really were created in His image, and he thinks we're doing great. It would explain a lot.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Even I thought they were nice.

Maybe he wants to bring HER to Mars to colonize the place with people who have great minds and boobs.

Do you think this is the nurse that he married?

from wiki:

Hawking's wife cared for him until 1991, when the couple separated under the pressures of fame, his increasing disability, and the consequent need to employ round-the-clock nurses, one of whom he became involved with. He and his nurse, Elaine Mason, were married in 1995. (Elaine Mason's first husband, David Mason, had designed the first version of Hawking's talking computer.)
