The new van has a digital gauge showing your average MPG per trip, and now it's fast becoming a favorite game of mine to beat my previous "score" every time I make the same trip. It's thrilling to beat it by 1/10th of a mile, and crushing to lose a tenth! It's also causing me to experience more road rage when drivers in front of me are driving poorly and causing me to lose mileage. I know it's good to conserve gas, but I think I might be developing a problem. Any ideas on where to go for help? |

LD, there is no hope. We got you now! ![]() People in front of you can only hurt your MPG if you follow closely enough for that to happen. I don't. I have two trip meters. Trip A - I zero when I fill up. Trip B - I zero every morning when I start the car. This tank is on its way to being the best ever - even better than the last, which was 65 MPG. So far I've gone 555.9 miles and can go another 150 to 200 on this tank, and have gotten 64.6 MPG so far. The display is about 1.4 MPG low, so when I calculate it at the pump I expect around 66 MPG. Yesterday I had the display up to 65.5 MPG but I had to make a couple short trips. ![]() ![]() BTW, today sucked. My daily record is 71 MPG and today I only got 68 MPG ![]() That sux.

Yup. Actually it was just a quickie at 1600 ISO. If I changed it to 100 ISO and used a tripod and f8 it would have been more sharp and clean. |

Yeah, but now I'm going two miles out of my way to get that extra 10th of a mile on fuel efficincy  . |

Good point, Luke's Dad. The goal is to reduce total fuel consumption over any given length of time rather than to increase fuel efficiency.

I have a friend who has the same hybrid as I. She struggles to get MPG in the 50s. (Imagine being dissapointed with 50 MPG?) She says it's all the short trips I told her she need to warm it up on the freeway for 30 minutes before running errands; that'll increase the MPG. Actually LD, do you know how accurate your gauge is? Do you whip out a calculator at the pump and average it over several tanks? My old hybrid indicated an MPG that averaged 3 higher than what I calculated at the pump. This new hybrid is inaccurate in the other direction. MPG nuts are forever arguing over which is more accurate, the number on the dash board or the calculation at the pump. I think calculation at the pump is more accurate if averaged over sevaral tanks. I'm sure the pump's measurement of gas are not calibrated to be perfect to 0.0000 of a gallon. And calculating at the pump is never perfect because you are dividing the miles you just drove by the gallons you just pumped (and who knows if every pump is calibrated to shut off at precisely the same back pressure). You'd think with all this new computer-controlled stuff and fuel injection the MPG number on my dash would be very accurate. |

It's like some bizarre motor racing off-shoot. Actually, it might be quite a good idea for a sport. 20 laps and the winner is the guy who uses the least fuel - you could try to utilise slipstreaming, the absolute mininum wheel spin for best efficiency, as gentle cornering as possible... On second thoughts, I think I'd rather go back to watching paint dry. |

Actually John somebody beat you to it. Haven't you heard of the "Green Grand Prix"? The winner of the Hybrid MPG award got 76.1 MPG in an Insight. Hahahaha! ![]() ![]() http://www.glenspeed.com/2006_greengrandprix.html Snip: Watkins Glen Host To Historic Green Grand Prix Watkins Glen, N.Y. (June 9, 2006) — History was made on June 2nd at Watkins Glen, N.Y. by the Green Grand Prix as 35 hybrid cars and alternate fueled vehicles competed in the first-ever official SCCA road rally for these cars in North America. The rally was held on a 78-mile course around the perimeter of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The rally hosted by the Glen Region of The Sports Car Club of America was part of a slate of activities during the all day event. |

Kenny and LD, I just drove in a Prius - with all the bells and gadgets you could dream of. Seems like it would be very fun to buy. You push a button to start, and even park the car. The whole interface is touch-screen, etc....very cool indeed! |
