Don't you? We do.

edit:
I guess you're talking about a bigger tax, if you're comparing it to tobacco, and it's not a bad idea, I think.
We do pay a tax on 'non-essential' groceries here.

No way, that would make the government WAY too invasive and controlling, as they have been in the past with certain areas.

Smoking directly causes death, one of the highest rates among any product.

Soda causes cavities if you drink alot of it and don't brush. If you taxed soda, you'd have to tax a thousand other types of food...and that's a place the government would needlessly be sticking their nose.

Well I'm not sure which products are taxed, I only see the retail price, and I don't smoke, so I don't know cigarette prices...

But booze is also far more deadly than soda.

So why do they tax booze?

the government will do what we let them do; therefore, we get the government we deserve.

Why not? Eat enough of anything and you'll get fat. Too much water is poison too.

I'm against the sin taxes (as the British call them). The government is never effective at preventing anything - just think of the money wasted on trying to stop the drug trade.

I think there's a good reason for taxing cigarettes up the wazoo, as it may dissuade children from starting to smoke. Of course, this would imply that they get reasonable levels of pocket money, a rant for another day. Once you're hooked, as I know all too well, price isn't going to make you stop. Let's face it, if fear of lung cancer doesn't make you quit, very little will.

Yes, we can all become chronically ill, bedridden nursing home patients, semi-conciously wallowing on our ulcerated decubiti.

But we'll all live to be 90.... :juggle:

Let me guess, your glass is half empty? :D

I know of a few people who say it's better to go quickly, and earlier than this. I'm hoping for the old 'shot by jealous husband on 100th birthday' headline myself.
