I have been listening to the radio show for 25 years and Robert Altman is my favorite contemporary film director.....so take my review with a bit of ketchup....

I have not smiled as wide from start to end with a film as much as I did with Prarie Home Companion. Meryl Steep is AMAZING. The film is a perfect collaberation between Altman and Garrison Keillor---both artists shine throught brightly. And the music is great.

If you like the radio program you will love the film.

Thanks for the review, Jack. I like PHC whenever I listen to it, which is rarely, but was wondering about the movie. It got pretty good marks on Rotten Tomatoes.

My mother and two sisters took me for my birthday to the recently recorded show at the Hollywood Bowl -- two weeks go I think it was. Good fun!

I saw the movie on Friday afternoon.

I had heard a couple of reviews of the movie before I went and they basically criticized it for not having enough depth and for being disjointed. I thought "You guys just don't understand. That's the whole point!"

Whenever I listen to Prairie Home Companion, I just relax and grin through the whole things. It is one of the most pleasant things I do each week.

I found the movie the same way. It was just....well, a damned pleasant and nice way to spend a couple of hours. Basically, nothing but entertainment.

Well worth seeing, I think.

(Jack -- if you and Kathy ever get to So CA, I'll be happy to pour you a cup of Catholic coffee! )

I knew you'd horn in Kenny!

That's the trouble with you gay people -- always wanting what others have.

First we have rights, then you want rights.

Then we have marriage, and you want marriage.

Now Jack says he'll let me know and you want him to let you know too.

Are you people never satisfied?

All right, all right...obviously we need a phone tree here.

Jack can call me. I'll call Kenny. Kenny can call OT.

Anyone else?

I'm a relatively new convert to Garrison Keillor within the last 5 years, but I think he's very funny. If I get the chance, I'm going to go and see this one. I'd grow a goatee to demonstrate my allegiance, but I don't think I have enough testosterone to manage it.

Ahhh...in America's Finest City.

You sure you want to drive the 5 just to see Kathy and Jack?

(Or maybe we can all come your way. I really do like SD!)

The sad thing about Keillor is how spot-on his depictions of the Lutherans is. As a fallen Catholic, converted to Lutheranism, and now with serious doubts about that, I can attest to his accuracy.

PHC is charming.
I used to listen to it a lot.
Less today.

It has its moments but his whole shtick is growing long in tooth.
The Lutheran jokes were funny for the first 87 years.

You know, at the Nativity, the only Gentiles there were the three wise men. Everyone else was a Jew. So, it stands to reason that at least one of them was a Lutheran.

Since I grew up in South Dakota, am half-Scandinavian, and was brought up Lutheran, I saw Prairie Home Companion in my everyday life.

One such PHC-like but true story -- there is a community theatre in my small hometown in South Dakota. One night during the interval, they held an "Ole and Lena" joke contest for anyone who was willing to get on stage and tell a joke.

After several prominent men got up and told their jokes (and by prominent in this part of the country, i mean like the man who owns the trinkets shop, the guy from the tackle & bait shop, the principal, etc.). My Mom thought she had a funnier joke so she went on stage in front of the townspeople and told her Ole and Lena joke. Oh, they erupted in laughter! "whoo, that sure was funny! whooooooo!"

So my Mom won the joke contest during the interval, and her prize was a season pass to the community theatre and a seat on the community theatre's float during a town parade.

There's a movie that reminds me of that PHC slice of life -- "Waiting for Guffman." I laughed so hard watching that movie because I recognized so much of Upper Midwest smalltown living in it.
