"Popping" Your Back; Is it good for you?

Is "popping" your back good? All of the google's I've done suggest it isn't. If it isn't, are there exercises that will help properly align your spine? My sister has "aches" and stiffness in her back and my father has always "popped" it for her. He did it just two weeks ago. It seems strange that it needs to be popped so frequently.

Thanks in advance for all of your wonderful advice!

ZOOOOOM!
Well my mom has serious back problems, so I'll try and summarize what she's told me over the years.

I'm pretty sure craking your back is like cracking your knuckles; bad habit, and not really good for you. Not TOO detrimental, unless you do it very frequently.

She goes to a chiropractor, and despite claims that it's a bogus practice she's a lot better when she comes back from one. She goes back once every 4 months or so.

One of the things she said about back pain is that one of the best things you can do for it is work out your stomach muscles. Your torso's pretty heavy, and anything you can do to help the muscles which support it become stronger will help with back pain in the long run (unless you have something more serious going on).

Anyway, that's about all I've heard.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I Owe It All To John D'Oh
Cracking your knuckles, or your back joints, or any other joint, is just releasing trapped air in the joint.

I believe that people susceptible to trapped air in their joints are more susceptible to arthritis. I am not aware of any studies that suggest that cracking joints by people who are susceptible to the trapped air thing increases the risk of arthritis.

Maybe one of our medical professionals can comment. Bach? George?

No evidence that "popping" joints is in any way harmful. Does not promote arthritis or defomity. If it feels good, do it.

However, the common chiropractic practice of manipulation and "cracking" the back, in the hands of a poorly trained or incomptent practioner who misses a diagnosis of something serious can be catastrophic. I've gone to chiropracters, and the help was good, albeit temporary. OTOH, I know that, other than a few blown discs, I don't have serious back pathology.

(Obligatory Lightbulb Joke)

Q: How Many Chiropracters does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Only one, but it takes 33 visits, 3 times a week for 11 weeks

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
