The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

and it finishes out the same way with officials handing out red cards like candy.

It looks like US is somewhat in control of their fate again

Wow! Italy - USA was a great game! 9 against 10... the US players were great fighters! They still have a good chance to proceed to the last sixteen. I hope they will make it.

I was "sofa king" proud of our boys today. Down a man for almost half the game, and we still drew.

Arena blew it again.( He should have put in Johnson instead of Beasley (who still didn't know what he was doing).

Anyway. a historic result, and we're still in it. group E is definately the group of death now.

I think the referees were quite fair. Which decision of them didn't you agree with?

I see you Americans are catching up in your understanding of support of the noble game.

He needs to read the "trifling and doubtful" part of the rules of the game.
I think refs should not be as quick to card players as this particular one was.
The first yellow card on Eddie Pope totally wrong. It was a shirt pull by the Italian player, and Pope was pulled down on top of him. The ref clearly didn't see it. The second yellow card was justified - IMO - and at that point he had to be sent off. Mastraoni's red card was a stupid foul, could have broken Prilo's ankle, and justified a red. Lots of refs would have given a yellow, though.

His refereeing was also inconsistent. He handed out lots of cards, and called lots of fouls in the first 60 minutes, but hardly anything after that. Anyway, the damage was done after 47 minutes, and he almost lost control of the game.

What an incredible effort by the US. Reminds me a bit of the miracle US Olympic Hockey team in 1980. For what it's worth, the ref, Larrionda, was barred for six months in 2002 by his country's (Uraguay's) soccer federation for unspecified "irregularities."

It's nice to see the Italians being as sporting as ever.

I'm sure you know that the notion of fair play and good sportsmanship is essentially an invention of the British ruling class. That notion is not exactly prevalent in other, notably including Mediterranean, countries. Although I find the lingering British two-class system attitude abhorrent at least in principle, the reasons I'm an anglophile stem from the cultural legacy of the British ruling class.

BTW, there is a classic Italian card game called Briscola, or Brisk, where cheating is an expected and acceptable part of the game.

We Italians are a real piece of work! ^_^

I didn't see much of the blood bath game, but did catch the Ghana/Czech game; that was the kind of soccer I enjoy watching. I think that was the best game yet.

I went to three different sports stores yesterday, looking for some world cup T-shirts (not much here, mostly Italy or Brasil), and found several Canadian team jerseys on the sale rack. :( :(

The games today were ok. The best was probably S. Korea and France - 1-1 draw.
Brazil was not too inspiring vs. Australia but they won 2-0, and Japan drew Croatia 0-0.

Levity of the day. Here's a video of the Italians training:

Yep. They're in the drivers seat to get out of the group. They should beat Tunisia pretty easily.

I'll be the first to admit, this hasn't exactly been a very exciting start to the competition.... Most of the matches have been pretty boring. :(

Holland v. Argentina on Wed. should be the highlight of the first round.
