Yes, 'soccer' is more often used here, but we also have a lot of clubs incorporating the word football in their name; many team names (amateur level) are copies of British teams, and there is a huge respect for world class 'football', so both terms are generally understood, at least amongst the players and fans here in BC. |

The word "soccer" is really short for "association football," and the word goes back to the 1800's in England to differentiate the game from rugby football. The only countries today that call the game "soccer" are ones with football-like sports that are more popular than soccer - Canada, US, Australia,, and NZ. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. I'm sorry, Ozzy-rules football should not be referred to using the word 'sport', unless you also consider that mugging and drive-by shootings should qualify for the olympics.

Australia beat Japan 3-1. Proof that you have to play all 90 minutes: Japan was ahead 1-0 until the 84th minute, and Australia scored 3 goals in the next 8 minutes. Will have to watch the replay later. |

I watched a fun documentary last night, called The Other Final Not new, 2002, I think, so you may all have seen it. About a match between the two bottom ranking teams, Bhutan and Montserrat. Recommended, if you love the sport at it's purest.

Guus Hiddink is a genius. Two of the goals were scored by Tim Cahill, a late substitution. |

He's 6'7", I think. Stake in the heart of the US team. Great goal by Rosicky too. Hope the US start running in the 2nd half. |

The Czech team was great today, I hope the loss of Koller doesn't hurt them too much, but I suspect it will. Does the American coach always look so bored?
