Oh of COURSE, illegimize our accomplishment by saying we're playing the SCRUBS!!! Oh the nerve!! The... the... NERVE!!

(Okay cool out man, cool out. :P )

From Wiki:

The rankings consist of all of the member nations of FIFA based on their performance in matches over the past eight years, with the most successful teams being ranked highest. The teams are ranked using a points system, points are obtained for achieving good results in matches, and for performing well in international competitions. They are based on performances over an eight year period, though with the greatest emphasis put on the most recent matches, this means that teams with consistent good performances are highly ranked, but the rankings are fairly slow to respond significantly to changes in form. A new basis of calculation, to be introduced in July 2006, will only consider a 4 year period.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

The stats thing is actually quite interesting. In American sports statistics seem to become massively important - there's Red Sox fans I work with who remember all the meaningless gibberish attached to players names for decades. What does RBI stand for anyway? In football, it seems much less important, although there's a few English players who have pretty impressive DUI figures.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

*SIGH* :(

The greatest thing the US team could possibly do right now, is pull a George Mason and just plain play phenomenally in their next two matches. But heck, they could lose to CR and come home with nothing to prove to anybody. It'd just be nice to upset the brackets somewhat. And they're fully capable of doing so.

Well it's not like this is incorrect, or one's love of the game or knowledge about it is dampened by the fact that they call it "soccer".

Well, relating to that issue:

Quote:

We have to thank the british university students of the 1880s for the word "soccer". It seems it was the practice amonst the well bred students of Oxford to abbreviate words whilst adding "er" to the end; "brekkers" for breakfast for example.

It's not a stupid, uncultured American term. It started in England. It's an English abbreviation for Association Football.

Then why do you use it and we don't!!

GET OVER IT!!

You all also say honour and neighbour.

STOP WASTING U's!! How many trees could we have saved from the collective and reckless used of the letter "U"? Maybe like 6! SIX TREES!

Yeah, we steal everything from England (except for the computer, the telephone, peanut butter (MS  ), airplanes, coca-cola, pencils, cameras, helicopters and locomotives.) We're total moochers I tell ya. :P

And I guess we use it because that sport name was already taken?

Well, at least you admit the name of your game is stupid for American football. It's a start. :P :D

We are correct to call it football because the ball is football shaped.

I just watched the Germany/ Costa Rica game; brilliant!! That first goal was fabulous. Yeah Germany!! I can only hope the rest of the matches are that exciting to watch.

Personally I'm rooting for Angola and Ivory Coast. I would love to see one of these countries knock the snot out of the rich countries and win everything. ^_^

And sorry, USAers, but I think the Czechs will be showing you what's what.

Canadians being ranked 84th gives me the freedom to cheer on anybody. Tomorrow the English.
