Phlebas, you know way more about this than I so I would put money on your picks...

I don't know. Beckham will probably score another goal from a free kick, and I'll be an idiot again.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Yeah. Have to wait till Fri.

How do you rate England's chances against Portugal, and what do you think Sven should do?

Well, I hate to be mean but.................I'd ditch Frank Lampard for starters. Okay, if you look at the players that haven't played well so far, Beckham being the most obvious, he still has the ability (plus a **** load of experience) to change a match. He's been instrumental in most of the English goals so far, and, most importantly, doesn't suffer from confidence problems. Frank Lampard on the other hand does. He's got progressively worse as each match has gone by. Also, with Lampard in midfield, we don't see the best from Gerard, who is a phenomenal player and another with great confidence and reliability. Put it this way, I'd rather see Gerard presented with an opportunity in front of goal than Crouch who's an out and out striker.
I'm not fussed on the 4-5-1 system but read today that Rooney is happy playing up front on his own. If he got better service rom the midfield I think it would work, but from what I saw on Saturday he seemed to be receiving the ball over the left side and then playing it on to another player. Bit pointless.
I hope Gary Neville is back for Saturday as he's not just an oustanding defender but a great passer too.
The main problem for me has been the lack of creativity and attacking football. I don't think Sven uses a system or tactics that suit our players. The slow build up that's more reminiscent of the Italian style bores me silly and I'm yet to be convinced that the players are comfortable with it. Again, with Gerard seeing a bit more of the ball and Joe Cole back on form I think everything could change.
By in large, England without fail play better against better sides; remember the match against Argentina in the last World Cup? I'm sure they'll raise their game against Portugal, who, thanks to some choice refereeing, will have two key players missing, Deco being the most important. I think the grudge factor could well play a part too.
Hoooeee, I'm optimistic. :2face:

I think G. Neville will be back for Fri. Also, Ronaldo will not be 100% after that nasty tackle against Holland. Figo should be out with a red card, but has a yellow for the head butt (what's up with that? I thought a head butt was an automatic red?).

You're right, England plays better against better teams.

I agree, drop Lampard he hasn't shown much. He scored a lot for his club, but the WC is different with a different team. Have Gerard play his normal position with Carrick under him.

My problem with the 4-5-1 with England is Rooney looks great, but he's still not 100%. Did you notice that he seemed very tired against Ecuador? Also, the midfield is so packed with that formation. If Lurch Crouch was playing Rooney would draw 2 defenders, and the secon forward would be more free, and not have to pass the ball back. Lampard is an attacking midfielder, so 4-5-1 makes sense if he is in and playing well, which he's not. I would take him off, and play second forward - 4-4-2. You're right, though people make too much of the formation.

Anyway, I hope they win.

I'm looking forward to watching the team in the post Sven years.

Although I still think Argentina will win today...Germany playing in their home country is giong to put up a major fight. I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if Germany wins today. A reported over there was saying how he woke up this morning to nothing but excitement, noise, and electricity in the air...

My gut feeling is that whoever wins today is going to take the cup.

(Unless it's Brazil, who you can never rule out).

Came down to penalty kicks!

The German goalie guessed correctly on EACH ONE, and stopped 2 of them.

Germany won!

Wow...so intense....that German keeper is AWESOME!!

Everyone said Germany-Argentina was going to be an incredible match... they were right!!! :excited:

There was some grumbling in Germany that Lehmann was picked to be the first goalkeeper... bet there's no grumbling now! :D
It was a confusion of ideas between him and one of the lions he was hunting in Kenya that had caused A. B. Spottsworth to make the obituary column. He thought the lion was dead, and the lion thought it wasn't.

I never had a doubt that Germany wouldn't come back.
Best game of the tournament so far. Decent ref too - gave a yellow for diving.

that German keeper is AWESOME!!

There's a huge subtext to that - see Kentcounsil's post. I don't think Kahn would have made those saves - even though he's one of the greats.

So, what is your guess for the final?

Germany-England would be nice, but I predict England will loose in the semi-final against Brazil...

Wow, Italy is playing pretty well...or maybe Ukraine is playing awful.

Either way...fun match! Italy is scoring some great goals (thanks to the inept playing of Ukraine's keeper), and the Italian keeper is making some great saves!

Score at 63rd minute. Italy is up 2-0.
