I'd say it's a toss up between that and Joe Cole's against Sweden.

England's performance today was possibly the worst yet btw. I put the blame firmly at the manager's door for using the 4-5-1 system. Wayne Rooney was outstanding though.

Last night's match was the best yet. Non-stop entertainment: great football.

Which match do you mean, ycul?

Argentina v Mexico - it was a real thriller. Both teams passed the ball fantastically well and played positive attacking football. The pace was relentless and in the end it had to take something as exceptional as Maxi Rodriguez' goal to separate the two teams. Something exceptional up front was the one thing lacking in Mexico's team. Their defence was great - Marquez in particular played a blinder.

I agree, that was a great game. I just wasn't sure which one you meant, your nights are my mornings. :P
I love a game where the passing is so brilliant.

Portugal 1 The Netherlands 0 half time. Another good match.

That was a very interesting match. Good 1st half, and a slug fest for the last 40 minutes.
Neither side played very well, and there was a lot of diving by Portugal (bunch of cheaters).

Why didn't they play Ruud VN? Lots of questions for their manager.

The England match - and all the US games - proved the 4-5-1 isn't offensive enough against a good team.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

I dont watch soccer that much, but lately I've been having a good time watching!! I think it's a mix of the skill as well as knowing entire countries are on the edge of their seat cheering their teams on. Good stuff!

Yeah, what was that all about? Is he injured? Not that it matters much now. :(

Sorry to the English fans - wish them well - but I think it's going to be an all-South American final.

Anyway - Italy v. Australia , and Switzerland v. Ukraine today.

Wow, Italy almost left it too late. Australia almost had a famous victory.
The FIFA mafia is at it again. Questionable send off of Materazzi, and questionable PK call - in stoppage.

Poor old Aussies eh? Ho hum, I think that match was vying with the England one for the award of most boring tie of the tournament. Great penalty by Totti though. In fact, speaking of Totty, him and John Aloisi brightened up that match considerably. Hey girls, best looking guy of the tournament? Whodaya reckon?

Must be something about Italians falling down, and flopping on the ground. I'll never understand women.

I haven't seen the game yet, ycul. I'll watch with a critical eye later.

Speaking of diving, I was watching a local league game with our Vancouver Whitecaps and a Puerto Rican team last night. While it wasn't the quality of play we see at the World Cup, the ability of these players to crash, fall down, and quickly jump back up was striking. The contrast was pretty amazing.

I missed the falling down bit; I liked the look in his eye when he took that penalty though.
Phlebas, can you tell if a player's going to score or miss before he takes a penalty? I had no doubt that Totti would score did you? Some players are amazing at blocking out everything around them and focusing purely on the goal aren't they? Pity England don't have a few more like that..........

Yeah, it's funny I can tell if someone is going to pull a Baggio. For example, Larrson looked like he was unsure before he took the kick. Totti definately looked like he was going to bury it. Same as the one Beck's did against someone or other in '02.

On the other hand, my man Brad Friedel always looks like he's going to save a PK - since I've seen him do it so much.

Most boring game of the WC - Switzerland and Ukraine 0-0 through 120+ minutes.

Switzerland missed all their penalty shootout tries (what are the odds of that??), and Ukraine goes through.

"Thank God that's finished - I feel like I've been here for 10 years."
Alan Shearer BBC Sport

[at least they made it to the 2nd round which is more than I can say for my team]Switzerland must have been trying to lose[/at least they made it to the 2nd round which is more than I can say for my team]

I didn't get to see this game till last night; and I really question the penalty kick. I think that was a bad call. Crappy way for Australia to lose.

Today's games should be better.

What I remember is Fabio Grosso should have cut the ball to his left. Instead, he saw Lucas Neill sprawled on the ground, and decided to trip over him. Too bad such talented players think they have to cheat to win.

Also, Harry Kewell missed the game because of gout. Where did that come from? I thought the last person to get gout was the Earl of Sandwich.

I wouldn't. They dove like crazy in their game with us, and I'm still mad at them. We were terrible, of course.
Also, Freddie Adu picked that of all days to announce that he might like to play for Ghana instead of the US.

No worries, Phlebas. It's not looking good for Ghana. Half a dozen yellow cards, and a glaringly obvious off side goal by the Brazilians.....they're not likely to have cool heads for the second half.
