What other English forwards would you have sent? I think it's more of a training problem than a talent problem. England was caught a bit when Rooney broke his foot, and they're lucky they can get 60 minutes out of him., and he's not still limping. This reminds me of one of my favorite headlines of the 2002 WC. When England was going to start Mickey Butt in one of the games, one of the newpaper headlines - probably the Sun - had "Eriksson Poised to Pick Butt." |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. Looks like Owen is out for the WC. This might expose Sven's mistake in taking Theo Walcott on the team. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/w...and/5100516.stm Great game today, if you can watch it: Argentina v. Holland. |

I'm taping the Argentina/Netherlands game (it's on at noon here); I think it should be a good one. Caught a bit of the Portugal/Mexico match, some great action happening. Worth checking out when it's replayed. |

A man has tickets for the World Cup final. After he has been sitting in his seat for a few minutes, the man in the seat behind him taps him on the shoulder and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him. "No," he says. "The seat is empty." "Absolutely incredible!" said the man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the World Cup Final, one of the great sporting events, and not use it?" "Well actually," he says, "the seat belonged to my wife. She was supposed to come with me but she passed away. This is the first World Cup final we haven't been to together since we got married." "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," replies the man. "That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else to take the seat? A friend or relative, or even a neighbour?" The man shakes his head "No, they're all at the funeral." |

Today is the last chance for the US to get to the last 16. They need to win against Ghana (should be doable) and Italy needs to win against the Czechs... |

I think Italy should win against the Czechs because they have so many injuries, especially Koller and Baros. US game is wide open. If arena plays 4-5-1 they'll tie or lose, If he plays 3-5-2 with Johnson as the second forward, they'll win. |

Here's the lineup for the US - Ghana game. Looks like he's going for a 4-4-1, or 3-5-1. Kofi Anan wished Ghana good luck before the game - further reason to burn down that building on the west side of Manhattan. I'd say Switzerland is going out today. They'll lose to South Korea, and France will beat Togo. You might have to stick with Australia until they go out. |

That was a horrible call by Merk, and he should have called Ghana for diving and wasting time (I'm surprised they were such cheats). Bottom line is, we played terribly, and should have beat them - no use whining about the ref. The heat seems to be - temporarily - off Merk, and on Graham Poll, who handed out three yellows to a Croatian player before sending him off. Merk is a terrible ref, and should have been sent home after his performance at the Australia-Brazil game. |

Congrats to England. (you didn't play very well though) .Beckham scored just after I told my wife he can't run anymore, and is only on for set pieces. They should have played with two forwards. Also, what was with all the long balls from Ecuador? They're too short, and couldn't get the second touch. At least the ref let the teams play for parts of the game. |
