Good luck against Paraguay! I heard Beckham wants to become the 2nd Bobby Moore

Does anybody watch the worldcup in the US or is it still as unpopular as it used to be?

You seem pretty excited for beating a country that has less than 1/20 of your population. If they were able to score 2 goals against you, you should have been able to score 40 against them. :P

Our soccer "success" in the last years has made us humble, so we are happy even about winning against Costa Rica

People watch it here, but I'm a little disappointed on the fan support. The cool thing to do is pick another team besides the US to cheer for. [snarky]Apparently they feel prouder for a team belonging to a country that 20% of their great-great-great-grandparents come from, rather than their own. [/snarky] Perhaps this is inaccurate, but with my own experience I know a good handful of folks who are backing other teams, not the US. I dunno, for me the World Cup and the Olympics are about supporting YOUR atheletes, YOUR representatives in a world sport arena. If you're going to care at all, why not get into your own team?

This wouldn't be so bad were it not for the fact that, despite the US being ranked 5th in the world, we're STILL not taken seriously as a legitimate soccer team.

I guess it'll just take a World Cup win to prove 'em wrong.

I think if there was more of a fan-base here, that would help, Aqua. Maybe? I do find that interesting. I will be supporting England, but I have some of an excuse, as I did live there, and it is still part of my life, with my dad and brother living over there and all.
And how are you today?

Well there's no fan base, because everyone's busy cheering for other teams. And it's not like we're too wrapped up into football. The World Cup is once every 4 years, and for cryin' out loud, regular season BASEBALL is the only thing the World Cup is competing with, and it's STILL not as popular. It's not like we've got a bad team, either, so I just plain can't figure it out. No pride. :(

And YES MP, it is soccer, I'm sorry. :P

The FUNNIEST thing about watching the world cup is that hardly any of the players know their own national anthem!

Like right now, Equador, some of them are just mumbling along. :P

Okay for one, you didn't "invent" it. If I had to attribute modern day soccer to any nationality, it'd be the Chinese (or maybe even the Romans). You invented the modern rules.

And for two, football does make more sense, but we have that other silly sport over here, which is more popular, that took the name. I don't get that though, since most of THAT game is played using your hands, but whatever, soccer be just fine with me.

I cite irreconcilable differences.

Well, at least you admit the name of your game is stupid for American football. It's a start. :P :D

USA Team Preview 2006 - Team USA will be ranked 4th in the world as they enter the World Cup. Are they even that good?

YES, damm!t, yes we ARE that good, or else that wouldn't be our rank! Are you saying they don't deserve it, that the numbers are fixed somehow???

:veryangry:

I hope our team brings back the win, and thanks THEMSELVES for believing in each other. <_<

Worse that Germany's 7:1, but better than Costa Rica's 350:1 :woot:

Klaus, I watched the match today...good game, and a good result!!

Well if we beat the Czech Republic, there goes that point system, too. That would appear to be a huge upset with those rankings.

I'm just pulling this out of my ass (as usual) but my guess is that the US gets a higher ranking as it performs better than it otherwise would by playing countries who aren't fielding their 'A' team. Brazil, for example, has a team who are almost all playing in Europe, so it needs to field a bunch of ringers for less important games.

Does anybody know for a fact how the rankings are obtained?

Having said that, the US team isn't all that bad, is it? I seem to remember it did pretty well last time round

As soon the Stanley Cup is over- soon by the looks of things- then I'm rooting for

1) ENGLAND

2) AUSTRALIA

3) UKRAINE
