Why would China, which I believe is an officially athiest communist country, ban a cash cow movie based on a fictional book that challenges Christian teachings? I'm scratching my head. Too thought provoking? http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/06/08/D8I405MO1.html snip "The Da Vinci Code," which has been opposed by Christian groups because it suggests Jesus fathered children who continued his lineage, has made $13 million since its release on May 19. It was on its way to becoming one of the highest-earning foreign films in China, the executive said. |

Ahhh....their's is not an athiest communtiy. Religions most common in China are: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism |

Just a quick point of clarification: China isn't an athiest country. The government doesn't require its citizens to denounce any and all religion, and if they ignore the issue and keep church and state seperate then they're no more athiest than our own country. Most of them are Taoists or Buddhists, I believe. |

Thanks for the info.Something gave me the idea that athiesm was endorsed by communism. Oh those pesky isms. ![]() Shows how much *I* know. So, does this shed any light on why the movie was suddenly banned? |

I imagine they banned it because it emphasises the importance of Christianity. The film's all about Christianity, even if Christians don't like it. [Disclaimer - I've not read the book or seen the movie, so I'm making assumptions] |

Well okay for one, I love how the article starts.
 If you follow China's policies for a long enough period of time, you stop pointing this out. Gets tiresome. I doubt it's cold, hard censorship. I mean, they allowed Pearl Harbor and countless other American films. Who knows, some weird Chinese government thing. Did they ban the book(s) as well? That'd help shed some light on things I'm sure. |

Well China's no free market, that's for sure. The government has their hands in just about everything, and so they decide what's allowed and what's not. Censorship is a way to (attempt to) control the population. But for some reason I just can't fully buy that this is a plain and simple censorship case. Doesn't make any sense to me. |

In a lot of ways China's market is more free than ours. |

If I lived near kenny, I'd sneak into his garage and pour a gallon of gas into his car every other night or so. Then, a week later, I'd start to siphon a gallon out.

One of my students is heading to China for a month while she's on summer break from college. I am very interested to see/hear what she learns when she returns. She is one smart cookie. I know she'll have a lot of interesting perspective. |

I dunno, I had the same idea before, when that whole "gay agenda" business was going on. After kenny posted his "agendas", I had this mental image of people in shock and horror watching kenny, half asleep and staring at a kitchen TV, eating his soggy Cheerios and watching the morning news. "Oh the HORROR!!!" (kenny, no offense man, this was supposed to show I found that idea pretty ridiculous myself.) |
