No bombs exploded. No buildings or people were attacked. But what Canadian police say was a timely operation to stop a terror campaign inspired by al-Qaeda could change how this country sees itself.

...

'Homegrown terrorists'

Tarak Fatah, a Muslim leader and activist who is frequently critical of hardline Islamist thinking, says the arrests are a wake-up call to his community.

"While the overwhelming majority of Canada's Muslims are stunned by this development," he says, "few can honestly deny that they saw it coming."

He expresses particular concern about the fact that many of the accused in this case are Canadian-born who seemed to have been drawn in recent years to the violent ideology espoused by what he calls "fascist groups promoting Islamic supremacy".

Many analysts are comparing the Toronto suspects to the young men who detonated bombs in London on 7 July last year.

"Homegrown terrorists" is a phrase that pops up again and again.

Tarak Fatah says Muslim leaders need to be especially alert for young men in their congregations and mosques who are drawn to Islamic websites and political causes.

"It's time to say enough is enough," he says, "A mosque is no place for politics."

Why should Dol, Sue, John D'Oh, Maple, Riley, Nak or I need a visa to travel to the US as tourists or on business? From what I can tell on this forum, none of us fall into the profile of would be terrorists.

Good question, AlbertaCrude.

At first, I thought we could exempt our Canadian TNCR members from visa requirement... then I remembered yhapho.

US visa requirement is applied based on a person's country of citizenship, not individual profiles. So even if you are a Catholic preist raised as an orphan from day one by a Catholic church-run ophanage, if you are a citizen of, say, Morroco, you'll need a visa.

The French, eventhough there was a French citizen among the 19 9/11 hijackers, are not required to apply for a visa to visit the US.

C'est la vie.

How are you going to keep John Allen Muhammed and Tim McVeigh out of the country?

Hmm... you reminded me of John Ashcroft's attempt to expand the Attorney General's power to strip Americans of their citizenship... there might be something to that idea after all!

That's the wrong approach. Should be based on profiling of some sort. Let's see now... how would a Muslim terrorist or any terrorist for that matter, likely look?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Political correctness has no place in national security.

It's also worth noting that whatever the government claim, unofficial profiling goes on. I work with two people who travel extensively, one is Iranian, and one is Greek but has features that could easily make him be mistaken for an Arab. They are both US citizens. They tend to get searched a lot. I can't imagine why.

That being said, my 76 year old mother was taken into a little room a month ago when she visited. Maybe they thought she was going to smuggle decent cheese into the country, or something. Or maybe they were just making up the numbers.
