So, you're sitting in Iraq trying to negotiate with the great satan. You know for a fact that the American president is a cowboy who appears to have invaded Iraq for no good reason (if you believe the rhetoric that has been slung around) - and that was after he was promised the "mother of all battles". You also know that one of your buddies dared to attack the US homeland and has been hiding out in a cave in some remote part of the world ever since (probably dodging various militias along the way). There's another little country across the way that also has a reputation for quick and decisive response, but you stood strong and declared they should be wiped off the face of the earth. Meanwhile, at home you have students protesting, and some kurds in the north makin noise. You also need parts for your airplanes, automobiles, and any other foreign made machinery. You made threats about stopping the flow of oil, but you really need the cash from it. Meanwhile the great satan's stock market wiggled at the threat. But in the back of your mind there's always that cowboy.....and he has another 2 1/2 years to run. |

Don't forget the cowboy has enough firepower in very close proximity, to go through your country like a dose of salts through a widow woman. And unlike Iraq, I think most of us don't give a tinker's damn whether we rebuild your country, or not. Now, do I think Bush has plans to invade Iran? Nope, not in the least. But let's hope the Iranians aren't quite so sure.... |

....And you know that if that cowboy attacks your country, it will rally support from your countrymen around you in the traditional rally around the flag reaction that always occurs if a country has been attacked. You also know that if you are attacked, it will enhance and guarantee your position as a leader among your Muslim neighbors, which is your long range strategy. You also know that if he attacks, the world will condemn him not you. And you know that if he attacks and damages or destroys your nuclear facilities, all it really does is delay your development of nuclear power by a few years, not stopped it and the next time you will do it far more secretly and with far less fanfare. You also know that the cowboy has dug himself into such a deep hole in Iraq that he needs you to find a way out for him. You also know that you have more influence in Iraq over the long run than he does. And you know that the cowboy should have figured all of this out as well..... |

Been there, done that.....didn't matter last time, and this time he has actually gone through the motions of trying to get Iran to drop the uranium enrichment. And the countries that balked last time are back communicating with the US.
Except your countrymen aren't the stupid morons that the press makes them out to be. You made the choice between free nuclear fuel with open dialogs with the west, and potentially no nuclear program and more isolation. Pride doesn't keep the lights on, and tends to fade as the weeks go on. Don't forget the students standing outside the Universities with signs reading "This is a University, not a seminary".
Your going to have to support this. Where's all the support for Sadam now that he's in jail. The Arab world does not support losers, so you would have to win to get the support. And you can't win while you hide facelessly behind other terrorist organisations. But to step out into the open would support the US argument and bring world condemnation.
What hole? The situation inside Iran is not all roses. Industrial facilities that were fairly prosperous under the shah were turned over to religious leaders and have been run into the ground through mis-management and corruption. Perhaps a review of how the ayatollah's got into power. The shah was busy pumping huge amounts of cash into the Iranian military machine at the expense of economic progress, and he lost popular support amongst the citizens. Khomeni used this popular discontent to start the revolution. Now we reach a period in Iran's history where the rulers are fixated on nuclear power (and probably weapons). Support for terrorist organisations is high, and fredoms are few (students are arrested for demonstrating outside the Universities). And the ruling party appears ready to sacrfice it's oil revenues, and imports in favour of nuclear enrichment facilities. History may repeat itself, only this time the Ayatollah's lose. So yeah, it's a chess game, but the cowboy is sitting on your door step and appears to believe that you are making a bomb, and that it is better to deal with this problem now rather than later. |

[satire] Iran May Stop Nuke-Making in Exchange for ICBMs by Scott Ott (2006-06-08) — In what may be a major breakthrough in stalled talks over Iran’s uranium enrichment program, the United States has reportedly offered to give long-range nuclear weapons to the Islamic Republic in exchange for assurances that it will soon stop production of nuclear material. A State Department official, speaking on condition anonymity because the deal is not complete, said the United States would provide at least three dozen land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) tipped with multiple independently-targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRV), as well as technical assistance and training to build the missile silos and bring them online before the end of 2008. “We realized that the only way to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons program was to eliminate the need,” said the unnamed State Department source. “We’re very hopeful that this carrot-without-stick approach will appeal to them.” U.S. officials were encouraged when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not immediately reject the offer, but demanded face-to-face talks with U.S. President George Bush, and also required that Mr. Bush appear at the negotiations wearing pink fuzzy slippers. The Bush administration is said to be studying the counter-proposal. [/satire] |
