All is not well in Iran:

Student unrest

Students on the other hand, report a completely different story. In short, they say that students from Tehran University staged a demonstration outside the campus to commemorate 2 Khordad elections (i.e. the day when on May 23 of 1997 Mohammad Khatami was elected president and launched a reform movement in the country) and to protest the transgressions of university authorities into student and teacher domains. Students chanted slogans such as “We do not want nuclear energy” and “Leave Palestine to itself, Focus on Us”. They also requested a change in the management organization of the institution and the manner in which the university community was treated.

Observers have estimated the size of these protests to be the largest since the unrest two years ago this month. Students from Allame-Tabatabai, Amir Kabir and Khaje Nasir universities too joined the protesting students from Tehran University.

Rick, If Iran is "the power in the region" what is stopping them from just moving into Iraq and taking it over? It's not like they haven't been wanting to.

Why would you assume they want to invade and occupy Iraq simply because they are the power in the region? Not every nation sees a need to do this to get its way.

Hell, they've got Cheney's and Rumsfeld's buddy Chalabi and their Shiite allies to exert whatever influence they need to have to keep Iraq in line.

Chalabi excercises influence in Iraq?

Middle sign reads: This is not a seminary, it is a university. Sign in red, on the right reads: Mr. University Dean, this is a university and not an army barrack.

Chalabi excercises influence in Iraq?

Ahem...

He is one of the prime actors in the little drama being played out in forming a government. Yes, he definitely is not only still around, but is a major power broker.

6 weeks ago, he was identified as the one to be named the Interior Minister, until that got killed with the change in Prime Minister.

That is just it. With al Jaffari gone the influence of Chalabi and, incidently, our old friend Muqtada "Mookie" al Sadr has been on the wane.

Let's see..... two or three years ago the lefties were whining about how Iraq was just being used as a stepping stone to Iran, and that Iran was no threat to anyone. Now, they're wanting Iran to be attacked, and it's Bush's fault that we don't have the manpower because we've been fighting in Iraq.....

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

The pacifist is complaining because we can't attack Iran......

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Like I've said all along - you democrats and lefties don't have a clue. It's a damned good thing you weren't in charge of anything.....

Given your first question was "Chalabi excercises influence in Iraq?" and now you say his influence is waning (under changes made only a few weeks ago), let's see how your vision of this pans out.

I would have thought Challabi would have been arrested and tried by the US after lying to our government on behalf of Iran to draw us into this war. And for that, he is now completing his term as Oil Minister. The man is not ogoing anywhere but staying as a major influence on the government, if not some high level position.

As for Sadr -- his is the largest private militia in Iraq and he controls his little fiefdom with an iron fist using fundamentalist Muslim law to rule, requiiring appropriate dress for women and closing schools for girls. We'll see just how much his influence wanes.

I'm not a pacifist ... I just don't think we should pick our military targets based on who made Lil' Bush mad by trying to kill Pappy Bush.

JB, I wonder if we should break the news to them that the plans to oust Saddam were already under discussion when Bush first took office......

Nah.... they'd never live through it......
