Miriam, it is not the penny that changes the person. It is the person that changes the person. |

If you really want to change, you'll do it, with or without a penny in your shoe. If you aren't going to change, then a penny will make not one bit of difference, except to make your foot hurt. |

Tsk tsk. None of that out of you, or I'll have to take Matt's stance on the frequency of a certain event.

Very wisely put, Sam, except in my own belief, I'd have to make a small theological adjustment - it isn't even the person that changes the person, it's God that changes the person first (to make the person even understand that he should change, and actually want to); then, after that initial act on God's part, the person can change. Gestures like pennies in the shoe that don't make you what you are, they merely remind you what you are. They're not some mystical thing that will assure you from going astray (as I can certainly attest, no matter how much I might feel that pewter cross bumping on my chest). They're just a tactile "nudge" - kind of like having the words of your mother pop into your head just as you're about to do something wrong. |

I had the Beguines and Beghards in mind. See also Cohn, Norman, Pursuit of the Millenium for a more in depth historical analysis. |
