Not a thing. And I don't really expect to.

Well, I suppose I'll get something when my parents go. They own their (modest) home, and their life insurance more than covers the debt they have. But they are in their mid 50s and reasonably healthy, so it's not going to be any time soon (knock wood).

This is a big sore spot for my family right now. My grandfather had several million dollars, and up until about 2 months ago, my father and uncle were the executors of his will. He had his assets split among his four children, and his wife (his second wife, not my father's mother) was very well taken care of through his careful planning over the years. Some time in the two months before his death, without anyone's knowledge, he changed his will so she got everything. I don't think anyone would have cared in the least, except that he's been telling them for the past couple years where the money all was and who was getting it. His kids see the last minute switch as a bit of a slap in the face.

That's so crap. :( Is your family on good terms with her?

They are - my father's mum died when he was about 20, and my grandfather married her soon after, so she's been in the family for a long time (she's the only grandmother I've ever known). It's not even the money that's the point, really. It's just odd. My grandfather has spoken several times using very specific examples about how he wouldn't leave all his money to his second wife because a lot of times the kids don't see any of it. We just don't understand the change of heart. He told her (apparently) that she should do with it as she sees fit - and she sees fit to keep all of it. It's her perogative, obviously, but my dad and his siblings are hurt by the spirit of the whole thing.

I'm afraid the vast Nina Family Fortune doesn't extend beyond immediate family....the laws of physics limit the expanse.

I anticipate a bidding war over my folks' 4800b modem, though. :D

I inherited a ring from my husband's mother. His father died when he was six. When his mother re-married, she had the stones and gold from her first engagement ring and wedding band made into a cocktail ring.

It's the one on my index finger

I feel left out!

A fertile source of family friction and litigation, this. Good for lawyers; bad for families.

We recently represented a defacto son who was disinherited by his 85 year old demented defacto father after dad met a trailer park bimbo from Florida who had a personals ad in the National Enquirer.

df son had taken care of this old gent for 30 years and spent every Saturday painting, raking, etc the property he was promised.

We won, fortunately.

My mom left each of the 5 of us a modest sum and my dad may or may not leave something behind, but my parents left a legacy that is priceless.

They built a modest camp on a pristine Maine great pond where Loons rule and power boats and jet skis are verbotten (sorry Improv). Fifteen camps on a lake that is three miles long and in the middle of {nowhere] paradise. then they put some money in a trust to endow the taxes and association fees forever.

It didn't take an enormous amount of cash to create this family treasure but it is truly priceless. This is a place they loved and it is available for us and our children and grandchildren forever.

That sounds really great, Jack :)

For the record, I was just kidding about the feeling left-out bit. I'm comfortable not having large amounts of money to deal with. I like things simple.

My first wife inherited $50K from her grandfather (her natural mother had died when she was a baby and he had no other heir). Unfortunately, his lawyer had absconded with the entire value of the estate.

That's a wonderful legacy you and your siblings share, Jack.
