HOLY CARP!!!

I keep my clarinet on a stand by my piano but haven't had a chance to play it in ages and (shamefully) have neglected it. I went to practice it this morning and it has become terribly tarnished. My greasy fingers and the air has caused it to oxidise and all of the (what used to be) perfectly bright shiny silver has become brown and yucky! I'm devastated! I've tried cleaning it with the cloth that came with it and it took some of the thicker residue off but the metal is still all dull and brown. I might have some silver polish somewhere but i don't know if it'll work... Does anyone know any tips or tricks with everyday household products for cleaning metal so i can get it back to it's shiny original silver? I will be forver in your debt! Please help me someone... x |

Try a little dab of white toothpaste on the keys and then rub off with a soft dry cloth or even your finger; hopefully it'll take the tarnish with it. (Oh I forgot... you're in England... do they even have toothpaste there? )

My wife has "tons" of silver jewelry. I clean the jewels by immersing them in a special solution for silver. But I guess that immersing the clarinet is not an option. So... go to a jewelry shop and ask for the special cleaning cloth for silver and start rubbing .... If you can immerse the clarinet then you either use the ready made commercial solution or you might use the aluminium foil + baking soda solution method (needs simmering). Do not use abrasive stuff. Once upon a time there was a special cream for silver cutlery ...ask for it at the general store. |

!!! BROWN SAUCE !!! Or Duraglit - you get it in tins and is wadding impregnated with a very mild abrasive polish. It's very effective ![]() The best thing however, is Autosol which is an automotive chrome cleaner. Get it from Halfords. It beats everything, including toothpaste, hands-down. Oh and take more care of your instrument from now on!
